Knox/Tri Ratings

Sooo.. I'm guessing no one noticed that ratings were out? Star in Knoxville getting beat 12+ by their own sister station.. Tri-Cities, Electric looks like it's regaining... Any comments?

Until someone can explain the phenomenon of an increased 60 year old + listening audience for WKHT Hot 104.5 during this fall book, I'm taking everything that Arbitron says with a grain of salt.

Well, I say this with complete honesty, my 80-year old grandparents thump Hot 104.5 in their Buick. My grandmother said that Star had gotten "too slow." Maybe they're not the only ones.

This is it? No one has anything educated to say about the ratings? Does anyone even care any more?? Maybe they should delete this forum. No one ever post's anything relavent or interesting.. I have an idea! Lets talk about "The History of (fill in the f**kin blank). Lame. Sooo lame!!

Someone make an observation or are you all so completely ignorant that you have nothing to say.

By the way I am willing to bet the next post will be aimed at me and can be summed up by "Nu uh, ur stupid".

Good grief WTH, calm down, dude! Most of us on here have full access to diary results and are not ignorant. Have YOU seen the whole book? Who's the real ignoramus? If you can't have a little fun, get off of here.

Not a lax attitude. Arbitron returns are such a joke, the mean next to nothing. I don't see how anyone can make any kind of programming decisions based on that load of crap. And it ain't gonna get any better until someone holds arbs feet to the damn fire.

The attitudes are not lax. The managers know that ratings are flat across the board and they don't want to talk about it outside the building. Simple as that. But there is a lot of head scratching going on, and some sweat wiping.

just wanted a response.. Just screwing around. :) Do you think we can discuss? get a convo going.. What do you all think about the ratings. What do you think about tri-cities radio in general.. lets get more active here!!

Having worked in that market at one time, I loved it while there. I think, for good or bad, depends on which side of the coin your on, that market is on auto-pilot. XBQ will always be number one, QUT, TFM always just behind them. Electric can make a play if it continues on the same course. I'm not there anymore so I have no idea how they sound, I'm just going by the ratings. I DO think someone with some serious jack could take on XBQ, maybe not win, but take enough numbers away that QUT or some other station could take the lead. The big thing your fighting is heritage. Until the PPM from Arbitron is the standard, do you think XBQ will ever be knocked off? People, a lot of times, don't write down who they listen to, they write down who they think they listen to. There is a difference. It's sad that in a market like Bristol you have what, around a thousand returns from Arbitron determining how well a station did.?

Yeah, a thousand returns. What a lot of people forget is the returns in the 18-34 demos......sometimes less than 10 per county. Thats total 18-34 not just men or women 18-34. Its crazy to base any kind of decision on that. And outside the top 3, no station has total market coverage, putting diary placement into play in a big way. And heritage for the top 3 pretty much locks up those positions. All the rest of the stations can do is hope for good placement and a mention or two extra and they see a big jump in a key demo. Its been argued that broadening a stations appeal might help. What has happened every time I've seen this consultant based plan implemented is the same: The station does not meet the expectations of its current audience and loses a massive amount of audience. Then the "new" audience never shows up. The way to have a successful station in the TRI is to do what you do, execute it well, and ride the ups and downs of arbitron. Most good programmers know thier market well enough to know if whats coming out of the speakers sounds good to thier audience or not. At least they should, thats what they get paid for.

You are right on it. When you are dealing with a smaller market size, it's much better to continue with what you believe in rather than switch/tweek formats everytime the book comes out. How many local business buy advertising because a station is number one. You'll get agency buys because of it, but I've seen many smaller radio stations who don't get a single agency buy but they are doing ok. The only people who do not think Arbitron is a joke are the ones who are number one in their demo when the latest book comes out. If I own a station in a market and by staying in touch with my community , I will have a really good feel about how my station is performing no matter what Arbitron says.

Ahhhhhhhh But those silly ad agencies base all their buys on those 10 Diaries, because they can't think on their own. The client gets no results and then feels radio does not work

Good for HOT, but I seriously think this was just a strange book. I don't believe for one second that Star will lose to KHT again anytime soon. Didn't HOT get those numbers without a PD too??

After being out of the area and returning, it sure is sad that the PD afternoon drive John ( I am the KING of "UUUH") gets away with saying "Uh" an average of 14 times per talk break. Last Thursaday (28 Feb), John, "Uh, I Uh, LOVE Uh, the uh, sound uh of uh my uh, voice, Patrick said "UH" seventeen times in a 28 second talk break. No wonder I was considered such an a$$ when I was a PD in a smalluh, I mean smaller market because I reamed my staff for UH. It is just a sign that Big John is not prepared when he opens the mic. And he is the PD. I would love for him to TRY to do an air check session with me. My worst breaks when I worked at KKEG in Fayetteville, AR beats his best. Of course if his talk break is less than 20 seconds then he only says "Uh" an average of 12 times. What the "H" is going on? It is a shame that in the top 101 market, there is such small time talent in management and on the air. Charles Maxey from SL-100 in Dyersburg, TN can program and work on air better than the big "QUT". Guess it's a good thing I am not programming there, because I would have to fire everyone exxcept Jerri George (she has the listeners). Congrats John for F'ing up what could be a GREAT station. Is it me, or is something wrong with the QUT picture? Maybe he should add a "D" because for a radio professional, his "Uh" should be "DUH". Am I the only talent currently not in the biz anymore that wants to cry at the pathetic state of those chosen by "Corporate Radio" to ruin, UHHH I mean RUN thier stations programming? Well I guess when you get a cookie cutter PD you get a cookie for a product. ???

Yeah I guess I have issues with jocks, especially PD's that say "UHHHHH" more than anything else. it's unprofessional small time radio. And I have lots of issues with that kind of jock in a top 101 market. Bet I'm not the only one who feels that way either, John, "UUUHHH" I mean Radio PD. ;D

Not sure if this sounds good for their last PD. What can anyone tell me about WMCT, Mountain City.

The last I heard, WMCT was owned by Paul Gobble, the same man who owns WETB, Johnson City. Don't know much more than that, though.

I wasn't trying to say that the success was due to the PD being gone...I was simply trying to point out how crazy the book was. I heard they've filled the position now.
