KNOX TV

I was in Knoxville earlier this week visiting family and taking care of some personal business and I noticed a TV station calling themselves KNOX-TV. It was on Comcast channel 4. The last time I was in Knoxville (Christmas Holidays), Comcast Channel 4 was the home to WMAK-TV, which was the RTV affliate in Knoxville. So, is KNOX-TV basically the same station with a new format (much newer shows than the old RTV station) and new management or is it a diiferent station than the old WMAK?

It's the old WMAK DT7, but was recently purchased by the owner of the CW affiliate in town (WBXX CW20). They changed the call letter to WKNX and the branding to "The Knox". They are operating it as an independent TV station with syndicated fare, reruns, etc., and selling it in tandem with sister CW20. There's info about them on CW 20's website.

Thanks for the info. I thought that was the case but didn't know for sure. Based on what I saw yesterday compared to what I saw back at Christmas, this had to be an improvement. I use to really enjoy watching RTV whenever I visited Knoxville, but the quality of the programming RTV had for the last year or show, after they lost the rights to over half their programming, it was very painful to watch.

Yeah, the new station is pretty similar to the types of programs seen on CW20, Fox 43, My VLT2, etc. (mostly court shows, talk shows, and syndicated sitcom reruns). I think CW 20's owners are mainly using it as a bonus buy for advertisers to make the stations an attractive buy. But I agree, it's certainly good to see it as a serious station again instead of the RTV network.

Since Im usually doing an afternoon show, I don't get the chance to listen to Q93 during the day. Today our technical engineers are working as we get ready to launch on a national platform (No not Nash) so I have time to monitor Q93 normally during the day, at night they play a heavy dose of currents, which as a programmer I have been critical of. I have heard them play songs I know don't test (Which surprises me for a Journal station) well and it has made me realize why this station doesn't fare better. Look at Sister Hot 104.5 Weaker signal but 3rd overall. Anyway today I have heard George Strait "Here for a Goodtime" and Rascal Flatts "Fast Cars and Freedom" both gold staples, is this typical of them or are they fine tuning there playlist for the flip to the big switch. Just curious? Not hearing any promotion at all, like tune in for something and the talk format is still on 100.3!

That's kind of what I'm afraid of. I actually kind of like that Q93 is an edgy, young, CHR type country station. I'm guessing it'll be more mainstream on the bigger signal. Personally, I think the country audience is getting younger, and I think there is room for a strictly 18-34, young based, edgy country format. (Current and uptempo intensive with hyped up production/jingles). If you've ever streamed "Thunder Country 106" from New Jersey, this is the kind of music mix I'd love to hear more of (very uptempo, current, with edgy album cuts, & an attitude). I'd be up for a country station that gave airplay to artists like Colt Ford, etc. that are hits with the younger country crowd and are certainly influencing mainstream artists like Jason Aldean.

The Knoxville Journal stations have done a great job with 18-34 and appears to have a really good handle on that audience.
