Knoxville Numbers

I think the big winner in the Citadel shift was... Journal.

Star up, Hot way up, clearly picking up most of Wild's deserted sudience. Even the Point was up over a point, their higest level since the station's early days as Oldies.

Looks like WIMZ picked up some steam, could be from WOKI losing Phil Williams (or half their signal).

Citadel does have to be pleased that the Sports Animal debuts that well, and that the River is only down half a point with half of their previous signal. The jury is still out on if the combined share (and revenue) of WNOX, WOKI and the Animal will be as high as the old WNOX, WOKI and Wild was.

All in all, I think this book is probably a throwaway at best for Citadel. With all the changes coming right in the middle of this book, its hard to tell what the long term impact of their shakeup will be. Could take until after the fall book.

Not sure if the rise at the Point will hold up, or even if that station will still be HotAC by the time the next book is done. But Journal can put a great deal behind the numbers that Star and Hot are putting up.

WOKI lost a lot more than 1/2 a point. TSL, Cume, everything else was down significantly. And if you look at the last 4 books, they've gone down in every book. It won't be long before the...eghm...river runs dry...

93.1 The Point had a very successful book, but now we look to the fall. That's where the numbers will show what's really going on with Citadel. Wild went off the air at the end of April, so there was only a month of Wild in this book, and Hot has already taken a leap in the rankings in all areas. They're definitely going to be a strong contender with Star, which is great for Journal.

I agree. I think it's time for a flip at "the River". They already are running it as cheaply as possible. The new sweepers sound horrible since they moved to 98.7. They sound like something they cut themselves instead of a real voiceover guy. Also, with Phil leaving and no big talent or direction, I just don't see them sticking around. They've already toyed with the Jack-like "playing stuff we like" slogan and imaging, so why not dump AAA and go with a "Jack FM" type variety/adult hits format? I'd love to see someone put a "Jack" or "Bob" or something similar on in Knoxville. Or even better, I would absolutely love for Citadel to try the dance/rhythmic AC "Diva" format that they've rolled out on stations in New Orleans and Baton Rouge. That would be great, but probably will never happen in Knoxville.

I'd say SCC has a lock on Jack for Knoxville. Although
the Oldies station(s) would make sense, Jack seems to
deserve a better signal. Anything other than B-97.5 is
possible. But, I'd say it'll still be on the oldies stations.
I am surprised no other competitor has taken the lead on
a Jack-like format. Then again, Jack's coming to lots of cities
with VH stations. It's the current top radio franchise for
sure.
