Knoxville Summer '10 ratings

The Summer '10 ratings are out and what a strange book it is. Stations which always show up (usually at the bottom, but show up nonetheless) are absent. Praise 96.3, Merle FM, WFIV, and The River are all no shows. Does that seem odd to anyone else?

Oh yeah, and the little talker beat the big talker.

Cue the 'but, but, but... WAAARGAAARBLE! in three, two, one....

/Cooking popcorn now.
//Anybody want any?

The Chattanooga numbers are strange too. All of the Citadel stations got a 0.0! I highly doubt KZ106 went from a 7 share to a Zero! What is going on here?

I see what you mean in Chattanooga for Citadel. They got nothing for the entire cluster as if they were delisted.

WIVK actually showed an uptick for the first time in, what, forty-leven books?

Is it possible that Arbitron intended to delist Citadel Knoxville and delisted Chattanooga by mistake? Some people expected they may hold back on releasing the Knoxville book. Maybe just a coincidence, but the delisting just might be for the wrong market.

Time will tell.

And speaking of errors, what is WMYU-FM?

Looks like Knoxville became "Subscriber Only", which likely means, you no pay for their services, you no show up, even in 12+ numbers. Bet if those smaller operations paid, they'd have at least 2 shares each.

Pretty sure the little guys could care less whether they're listed or not. They could even get away with misrepresenting themselves more easily, same way Citadel Knoxville's research guy did. The real crapstorm would likely come from ad agencies, who pay for info on the whole market. It would handicap them quite a bit.

Upon further review (and reflection) I wonder if anyone knows if WNOX is a subscriber right out of the box. A new launch rarely sees a bump for a few books or more, and 100.3 has to be happy to go from zero to 3.3 in only a couple of months.

Wish I knew how many days are actually involved in the survey period, and how many days WNOX was on the air during them.

And, with 98.7 plummeting from 8.3 to 4.9, that is hardly "beating" anyone, IMHO. Anyone seen any demographics or dayparts?

Flame away, babies!!!

When I say 'handicap them quite a bit' I mean 'irritate them for not getting info they're paying for'. And when I said 'same way Citadel Knoxville's research guy did' I mean 'same way Citadel Knoxville's research guy still does, but hopes to avoid being called out. Again.'

/hey, some of us admit to being liars

Wouldn't it be cool to see the diaries from that first week in August?

The irony of this situation is that if Citadel had held onto WNOX it would have an 8.2 in this book.

Food... for thought.

I can't answer for BR, Coach, but my guess is that he supposes Citadel was losing money on the original deal, therefore would be "in the hole" had the deal continued.

But one must also consider the millions in annual revenue they walked away from when they opted to give up the original Newstalk-Oldies combo. I don't know how much they would have made between the end of July and the end of October, but I have a hard time imagining that they would be in any hole.

Am I wrong?

You are not wrong. Several of us are lining up in case they want to give up WIVK. You know, for tax purposes.

I was speaking merely of the payment that they were making to Pirkle for the lease. The loss of revenue that they have from losing the ability to sell Oldies and NewsTalk is offset by not having to write a check for the frequency every month. They were paying more for the 100.3 signal than they were making on Oldies on 98.7.
