for a nice minute all you heard was nice classical music, and the repeating message " YOU ARE TUNED TO THE PREMIERE RADIO NETWORKS, JIM ROME WILL RESUME AT 6 MINUTES PAST THE HOUR"...
is it just my imagination does knr have the most technical glitches, downtime, poor sound quality on remotes, overlapping commercials, false starts on bumpers, playing OLD commercials advertising past shows and the such? is it equiptment, or just poor engineering?

Yes.

So they cut to the cue feed for a minute. I'm sure much worse has happened at WKNR.

If this was 'KNR's only problem...

:D

It's not as bad as a Northern California sports station I once heard, on a Sunday morning, airing the following:

"CBS RADIO NETWORKS CHANNEL 42... BEEEEEEP!... CBS RADIO NETWORKS CHANNEL 42... BEEEEEEP!"

...for over 45 minutes after the time I tuned in.

Not only did I have no idea how to reach the station to tell them that this probably ran for HOURS after a ballgame the night before...

...but they were owned by a competitor, and I wasn't in any hurry to get their programming back on the air. ;)

Apparently KNR is learning from WHK sted the other way around.

A bunch of us must've heard that...as I did too...and I usually don't listen much to Rome.

I've turned on WKNR when they're running ESPN after midnight and have a couple times heard the promo feed from ESPN. Also heard the same run on WTIG in Massillon on a different date. ESPN sends 30-second show promos....one after another after another (etc.)...and you hear things like: "....3, 2, 1...(pause...then promo beings)". And, I've heard it run that way on WKNR and WTIG for about 10 minutes (well, I gave up listening after 10 minutes!).

Kind of sad, and pretty obvious nobody's at the station when that was happening: automation screw-up.

I've asked this in the past: just how obsolete IS WKNR's automation equipment? Were they ever fitted with either Scott Studios (which the other Salem stations use) or Prophet? Or even Cool Edit?

And if there is no board-op in the control room, is that the reason why ESPN Radio will be aired off the bird in certain spurts? (Don't get me started on how they handle the "re-Romey" at midnight. Better yet, why do they air it in the first place?)

If Salem really wants to save some dollars at WKNR, why don't they make the necessary upgrades? I bet that a further-dumbed-down "ESPN Radio 850" could easily be run with a computer, audio board and small mic in the tiny linen closet that once held WCCD/1000!

XXX STUPID QUESTION ALERT XXX

What IS "CBS Radio Networks Channel 42" used for, anyway? It has to be more than that dial tone...

(I bet we could name a handful of stations in the area that have fallen victim to this ;)

Westwood One coverage of NFL football

Yes, before I shaped up things around there ;) - WCER has fallen victim to Channels 42 and 44 a couple of times.
I'm sure it's happened other places too - unfortunately, it's an even more noticable problem than going into Rome too early.

CBS Radio Networks Channel 42... BEEP!

You are correct, sir! Though WW1 does use 42/44/etc. for other stuff. It must have been, on this Sunday I heard it, for something like college football the previous night. Or maybe it was after one of the NFL Saturday games.

The channel numbers are merely holdovers from the SEDAT days, of course, as the StarGuide system is not based on numbers...but rather, names dialed up on an electronic display. (WWONE, etc.)

The tone-announcement-tone-announcement used to air continuously on the channel, at all times, when there was no scheduled programming on it. Presumably, this was intended to assure stations that they were tuned to the right channel before a ballgame or something?

It was roughly 9 AM on a Sunday morning when I heard this on the competing sports station...so I'm wondering if listeners to the frequency were treated to this since about 11 or so the night before!

Fixing WCER...

John...it's good to hear that WCER is getting fixed. Keep up the good work. For awhile I thought the FCC was going to make a personal visit to Broadcast Park and shut the place down. Hopefully you guys record the religious programming off satellite now instead of swiping it off one of the FM religious stations. When I used to live in the area and listen, it was noticeable that the programming was swiped.

The swiping wasn't going on when I got there, but I did help finally get the satellite back up and running a little over a year ago. Thanks for the kind words. It's been a real learning experience.

Re: Fixing WCER...

John...that's great news. They do a lot of Stark County sports from what I remember. I think some dude named Rich is like the chief engineer. Is he still there? Anyway, good luck John. It sounds like you've got things going in the right direction.

You should know that since you claim to be a former sports guy there ;)
I don't think we do as much as in the past though

He's still there as chief board operator - and a good one

Thanks again - you should take a listen sometime if you haven't lately

Re: Fixing WCER...

Yes...I did do sports for a little bit. I loved the sports action in Stark County. I didn't know if the station went more talk or what...but that's good news (sports is still there). WHBC and WTIG can't do every game in the area. I'll check out the station someday. I should be able to pick it up here in Cleveland.

KNR doesn't use automation software, they use the maestro system. No continuous automation, everything is fired manually. Actually, WCCD had the second biggest studio in the building at summit, even though EVERYTHING was played off a 360... Oh yeah, and they use Cool Edit 2000 or 95
