'KNR reporter leaving town

H

HeyYo

Guest
Just got off the phone with a friend. They tell me WKNR afternoon anchor Ryan McNaughton is leaving at the end of the week for a job in television. They say the chance to work in TV, along with a big lack of any additional opportunities at the station, led to the move. They also think he's moving to where his girlfriend lives out of state. Did not know where he was heading. Don't know if anybody else knows anything of this.

I wish him well; he was pretty good. Not Mike Snyder good, but pretty good. Never knew why he didn't get more air time. Certainly better than the part-time talent that may replace him. I'm sure a journalist with a degree from Syracuse like him will be replaced by an OCB product that will work very cheap. Any thoughts on his replacement?

Ryan is going to do TV in Syracuse.

His replacement will probably be either Darryl Rider or Matt Loede, who have done weekend and fill in work doing "sportscenter" reports on WKNR.

Ryan does very good on-air work. I like listening to him. I have one knit-pick/pet-peeve criticism of his and other WKNR update folks. When they tease their upcoming sportscasts, it is usually with such a lame tease, that I usually end up changing the station. Example, referring to the Indians having a rare day off..."They're taking the day off...I'm Ryan McNaughton, details coming up." YAWN! If that's the best you can do as far as teasing a sports junkie to listen to what's hot in sports news, I just turned your station off. Everyday, every sportscast, there is almost always a teaseable story that can draw your interest better than highlighting the fact that the Indians have a travel day or the Browns are cleaning out their lockers.

You DO know that he works for Metro right? He's not in the KNR building...

His "lack of opportunity" at the station is because he doesn't work for them. He also does updates on WING in dayton...

And for WHK/1420 in their TOH Metro-fed newscasts. Their closing slug is "I'm _________ with another 'KNR clip. For 24-hour sports, tune into AM 850 WKNR." Ugh!

WKNR farmed out their sportscasts to Metro long before Salem bought them. I'd say it was sometime in the Capstar/AMFM ownership.

I did not know they're not in the same building. That is interesting. Still, based on the part-timers I've heard on that station, I have to think he would be better than what gets put on. He IS one of their voices, afterall. Same goes for Jeff Thomas. Amazing what that station has turned into over the years.

I'm always surprised that updates guys stay with Metro for such an extended period of time. How could they possibly be making enough money and/or be content with their seldom on-air opportunities to sustain a long run there. Is the Metro sports department flourishing to such an extent that their reporters get to bask in their fortunes...i doubt it.

McNaughton is doing the right thing...Syracuse is a mid 70's market - not bad for a first TV reporting gig (considering he's not a hot blond). I suspect he'll be in Columbus in two years or so. I definitely wish him the best of luck with the new venture - it's certainly not easy to pick up and leave.
Edited by Whkam1420 on 01/04/06 05:50 PM.
