KNRQ move

Construction on the master antenna is supposed to begin this summer but KNRQ's application appears to indicate completion around December.

Obviously something's up. KNRQ, which is usually clear as a bell from the Eugene Global Tuners receiver, has some static this morning but is easily listenable, probably thanks to the tropo conditions. Those conditions are probably in their favor, as listeners would just notice the unusual static instead of a blank frequency. When I noticed the weaker signal on 97.9, I went to check 103.7 and it is off the air. It seems business as usual on 97.9.

Does anyone have any idea where KNRQ is transmitting from today? Like I said this morning, they're nowhere near as strong as usual, which lead me to believe that they were testing from the new site already, but a friend of mine living in the Portland area said he couldn't hear anything on 97.9. What's up? KXPC remains off the air.

Gleened from a posting by engineer Chris Weiss on pdxradio.com:
97.9 will do its FCC proof thing into a temporary input on the Skyline master antenna combiner (the HD inputs) Sunday morning after midnight so it can be licensed. They will then put the system back together and "KNRQ" will then do the silent STA thing until Stonehenge is ready with its new antenna.

This is very interesting but where did you get it? This is all I could find from Chris Weiss: "97.9 should complete all of its testing to file for the license of the recently modified application on Sunday morning. At the conclusion of the testing they will likely take it dark as they do not have a balanced combiner to add to the Skyline master antenna system, and will have to put the system back into working order. A balanced combiner is required to leave the backfeed of the HD signals intact."

Then again why take anything you read on the internet as fact ;D

Plus, they pretty much spelled it out in the "REQUEST FOR EXPEDITED PROCESSING". Their need to just get it licensed before Aug 1. Weiss filled in some of the important blanks.

Once it's licensed to Aloha, they can't transmit on 97.9 in Eugene since the KNRQ license will be modified for operation in Aloha.

Do not think the other Skyline users are going to turn off their HD just so KNRQ can run programming from a temporary site. They have no way of transmitting in the Portland area. The only real option is to file a silent STA. As soon as Stonehenge is ready with its new antenna 97.9 K*tbd* can go on the air for real with a full 54 kw.

In the just released 8/6/2013 CDBS Public Access application EMF is buying 97.9 KXPC Aloha, Oregon in Portland, OR for 6.8 million. They signed a network affiliation agreement on July 25, 2013 for it to rebroadcast EMF's K-Love format.

So, ANOTHER K-LOVE in Portland?!? They already have 88.7, AND 95.9 AND 96.3. Why do they need FOUR K-LOVE's?!?

88.7 is a rim shot from Mt Hood and 95.9 and 96.3 are translators. CUMULUS has an option to buy 95.9 they have yet to exercise for 200k that they will likely do. I cannot blame them for wanting a better full power signal. Eventually 88.7, 96.3 and 95.9 will likely not be K-Love sometime after K-Love comes to 97.9. They are assets EMF can get some money back.

EMF would be wise to make KXPC 97.9 HD and broadcast Air1 on the HD 2 signal of 97.9 for their current Air1 translators to pick up instead of 90.3 from Mt hood which can than be sold.

I know EMF does not like HD stations but they are starting to get a few that they own f they can rebroadcast a translator. Mostly they lease someone else's HD sub-channel to feed a translator. They are doing that a lot. It is too bad they do list their HD channels are on their station listings. That shows also how they do not value them. I know they have a K-Love sub-channel on their Air1 station in Honolulu (KHAI) 103.5 that they own.

IIRC, EMF doesn't like running HD subchannels. Also, it appears that EMF is now perfectly fine with running K-Love in markets where Salem owns a Fish station. (Nashville may have been the first instance, but this deal may confirm it.)

Sacramento, Nashville, Omaha, NE and Portland (now with a better signal.)
