KNRY/1240 Goes To Immaculate Heart

Historic AM 1240 KNRY in Monterey goes from Joe Rosa's People's Radio into the burgeoning Immaculate Heart Radio stable (or is that a manger?)...

From Radio Business Report:

Monterey-Salinas News-Talker KNRY-AM is heading into the non-profit zone in a deal with IHR Educational Broadcasting - the buyer is a specialist in programming geared to members of the Catholic faith.

From their online stream, it sounds like IHR hasn't taken over yet.

All of the Immacualte Heart Stations are netwroked and carry the same programming with local ID's.

Any idea how they get around the main studio & public file rules? Seems like they wouldn't be able to staff each location.

That's a good question. They probably have a local Catholic group such as the SF Archdiocese maintaining a studio and office. Remember that Westinghouse (pre-CBS) gave their 2655 Van Ness KPIX studios and offices to the Archdiocese prior to their move to 855 Battery.

The Archdiocese has a long history of doing broadcast media. Anybody remember Father Miles Riley's talkshows? Or perhaps Father Harry and the God Squad on KFRC?

That used to be KMBY didn't it?

KMBY, and before that, KDON.
If memory serves me correctly, (and I just have a little left) 1240-KNRY was 1240-KMBY and this goes back as far as I can into the early 60's. But, the current 1460-KION at one time “WAS” 1460-KDON, and both K-DON and KMBY were in competition with TOP-40 formats for many years here in the Monterey Bay Area, and to be fair, there was back then 630-KIDD with a short spell of TOP-40 HITS. Perhaps it’s just me, but I’m seeing a pattern here, 610-KFRC becomes 610-KEAR –Religious programming, 1260-KYA ends up with Religious programming, 1240-KMBY/KNRY becomes religious programming. Is there a message here?? Come to think of it, there are only a few, stations with their original formats still going since the 70’s,- KCBS, KGO, KSCO, KNBR. So many changes!!!

But it has to be in or near the city of license for each one doesn't it? Usually a lawyer's office...

I'm getting stations confused here. Instead of thinking about Monterey 1240 I was thinking about SF 1260, which *could* have a local office for public file and control if they wanted to do so. I was unaware that they'd gotten a waiver, so I assumed that 1260's control was at the transmitter on Candlestick Hill or in a broom closet somewhere in SF and their public file was probably at the Archdiocesan offices.

As to 1240, yeah I guess they'd need a waiver for that, but as a non-comm they could likely get it as Jefferson Public Radio has done with the dozens of stations they've acquired.

Is it just coincidential that IHR's recent purchases are in the 1200 range? There's KGW 1230 in Stockton, 1240 in Madera/Fresno (once KHQT, what now I don't recall) and KJOP 1230 in Lemoore/Hanford to go along with the former KYA.

Sometime in the last week, KNRY 1240 began broadcasting Immaculate Heart Radio programming (EWTN shows, mainly).
I heard it while on Monterey Bay Saturday night.

EWTN on radio? That has to be VERY exciting. On TV, I really enjoy watching a 100 year old nun saying 835 Hail Mary's. ;)

They're on 1310 here in Phoenix, and they're on my old Alma Mater, 920 in Reno (the former KOLO). Anything AM that isn't one of the two best AM signals in a market (KOLO was the 3rd best) is fair game for IH.

I have a separate thread going on the Religion/Contemporary Christian page in the Format section about how Catholic Radio is making big strides these days. When you consider how every market has several Protestant or Evangelical radio station, both AM and FM, you've got to figure it's time Catholics have radio stations for themselves if they're a quarter of the population.

But sadly, the decline in listening to AM is contributing to the movement. Lower power AM stations, high up the dial, aren't worth that much these days. Even high-powered AM stations low on the dial such as KGO are in trouble. So I suppose it's an opportunity for religious and ethnic groups to grab an AM facility for much less money than it would have cost a few years ago.

Notice what's on the AM dial these days? Not just Evangelical and now Catholic stations but those broadcasting in Mandarin, Cantonese, Hindi and Vietnamese. There are even a couple of Hmong stations in the Fresno area. How many people even know what Hmong is? (They don't even have their own country. They're divided between several Southeast Asian countries such as Cambodia and Laos.)

But that's better than letting the stations die. I'm sure Hmong speakers welcome having their own station, just as Catholics are now enjoying a radio version of EWTN.

I thought the Catholic church was in bad financial straits, having had to settle child-molestation cases and sell parishes in order to do so. So now they're flush enough to be buying up radio stations? In this economy donations must be down, so what gives? I would think it far less expensive to stream on the web than to go around buying up broadcast stations in market after market.

I have to believe the Catholic church has more money than any other church on the planet. Not that there's anything wrong with that. :)

Disclaimer: this coming from a recovering Catholic. ;)

Immaculate Heart Radio is a private company, founded by a guy named Doug Sherman in Reno. Supported by donations from "listeners like you".
