KNRY Monterey Sold

Also, Mr. Levine has purchased KYZZ-FM at 97.9 from Buckley. FM is ESPN Sports and AM is Immaculate Heart Radio. Looks like K-Mozart is coming to the Central Coast.

If you have an FM, why would you get an AM to simulcast? Would KNRY be extending the coverage area?

I don't think he'll simulcast. I'm betting Classical on the FM, Jazz on the AM to replace the old KRML.

There's a lot of history there...KNRY was KMBY, Monterey's leading Top 40 in the 60s and 70s. Robert W. Morgan and Bobby Ocean were there during their climb up the ladder as young jocks.

KNRY is one of those romantic, old school AM stations with the transmitter on site and the antenna across the street on the waterfront.

If I remember right, wasn't KNRY once owned by Bob Hope in the same time period when Hope owned WBMJ in San Juan?

Robert W. Morgan was also at KYNO

No. Robert was competing with KYNO at KMAK.

Actually, he was Bob Morgan when he was at KMAKe, and, true, he never worked at KYNO.

I don't know any of KNRY's history. I stopped by the station about 5 years ago and the manager was kind enough to show me around. One of the studios has a great view of Canary Row and the waterfront.

In terms of coverage, 1240 has a definite advantage over 97.9 IMHO. Yes 1240 is 1000 watts day and night and AM but it does the job covering the Monterey Peninsula and it sounds pretty good. 97.9 on the other hand does not cover the Monterey Peninsula well-it never has. 97.9 does well up and down the Salinas Valley and Marina but once you get past Marina and head toward Monterey and the coast, reception is not too good. From what I understand, current owner Buckley has done some improvements to try to get better coverage into Monterey but it still sounds weak.

Sorry, that should be Cannery Row, not Canary Row (tweet).

As for the good coverage of KNRY it may be due to the antenna's ground system, some of which is submerged in the bay. In looking at their antenna, I didn't see traditional radials but I did see some copper wires attached to it and from there they went underwater.

40 years ago - you could get the Monterey 1240 at night in southern California. That was then. The full price is 200 K Plus an extra 100 k consulting fee for a total of $ 300,000.

Both the old KMBY - 1240 Monterey, and KGY - 1240 in Olympia, Washington have very strong and good signals due to both being very near some salt water inlet or bay. And just a simple 200 foot tower to boot.

That station was great back in the day, it's call letters are awesome, that's my name, just had to say that.

He is also buying an FM translator for $90,000 to simulcast 1240 on. K234AW Monterey at 94.7 with a CP to move to 95.1.

So if it is a translator does that mean they will have to use an AM radio for the feed? That'll sound weird on FM.

No, it will sound just fine, stereo, and all that. The rule is that the AM may only simulcast to the translator, but the translator may not have separate programming according to the FCC. The translator takes a plug-in feed from the main studio equipment, just like the AM transmitter does and that's that. Because of the lack of AM Stereo, the addition of the FM translator will give it full fidelity and all the bells and whistles - except at a low power not to achieve more than 250 watts and it may nnot extend the AM coverage area -- especially its main signal. The translator can't go beyonnd that .5mv coverage.

MOUNT WILSON FM BROADCASTERS, INC. is now buying K294CA 106.7 MONTEREY, CA for $125,000. 106.7 has about the same coverage as the other translator they are buying K234AW, 95.1 MHz, Monterey, CA. The application says 106.7 will relay "THE HD2 CHANNEL OF KYZZ".

I thought the HD2 of KYZZ is supposed to be Jazz the format that is also supposed to be on KNRY 1240 kHz Monterey, CA. So why would they need 2 translators for Jazz? We will see.
