KNSJ countdown

Activist San Diego's CP for their Descanso (89.1) station is nearing expiration, June 29th. Maybe they'll protest that... 3 years to complete this project and no updates are posted on their website.

Well, they thought they had a good potential progressive audience in Descanso, but that guy moved.

Actually though it looks like they are continuing to throw good money after bad on this:

"KNSJ people-powered community radio is hosting a FUN-draiser!

It’s been a long haul, but we’ve finally got the green light and we’re ready to bring you San Diego’s people powered radio, a radio station by the people and for the people. A crew of 5 people went up to Monument Peak to tackle the most difficult equipment issue that has faced KNSJ. After securing a contract to rent tower space, we mounted our high-end $15,000 custom built antenna on the tower. Please join us in celebration at our FUN-draiser."

and this also from http://knsj.org/

So as of May Day 2013 KNSJ’s antenna has been installed at 6300 feet elevation pointing toward San Diego and the coast. We feel a great sense of satisfaction that we have gotten to this point and thank all of you who have donated and pledged to make this groundbreaking project a reality.

Please keep the pledges coming as we will have $2000 a month in ongoing expenses and are looking to raise another $1200 a month in pledges for our first part time station manager and staff. Please click here to make a donation.

We are not ready to go on the air until we take up the $5000 transmitter, the $2400 emergency response equipment, satellite down-link and submit our certifications to the FCC. All of this can easily take us to the end of May, give or take a couple of weeks. Nevertheless, after six years effort, we feel like we are only minutes away from broadcasting and streaming on KNSJ.org

Aside from all of the diatribe, what actual signal strength are they actually going to have to reach into all of the canyons and crevices of San Diego? Let's face it, FM signals are not very forgiving especially in a terrain like what we have in San Diego County.

David Eduardo?

Lots of signal blockage to the west.. and KPBS' La Jolla translator is heard near the coast; not to mention Ensenada
89.1 .
Both CHP and Sheriff (among others) use Monument Peak, only for extreme east county dispatch. To cover westward, Lyons and Cuyamaca peaks.
That contour map is likely generated by the same, aaah, individuals, who sketched the KSIQ coverage from Morena area. Bullseye, johndavis.

That's probably a plausible 40 dBu coverage area, though terrain will make things worse than they appear there. The real problem appears to be a tremendously optimistic view of what a 40 dBu signal will do - not to mention a rather comical confusion between "40 dBu" of signal and "40 dB" signal-to-noise ratio. Good luck to them...

Yes, it looks like they really don't understand what makes a usable signal.

Based on measured listening in metro areas, 95% of in home and at work listening to FMs occurs inside the 65 dbu coverage area. On average, 2/3 of all listening is in home and at work. This station will only deliver that kind of signal to well fewer than 25 thousand people.

This is what I was afraid of...the usual progressive "pie in the sky" attitude.

There are going to be a lot of disappointed people when they see their efforts are literally going to go to deaf ears.

You know if they are the same listeners that were listening to 1360 KLSD as progressive talk you would be surprised at how few listeners that there were. When they mounted their protest at Granite Ridge due to the pending sports format about 50 homeless people and a bus from the insane asylum showed up, and maybe a couple of Winnebagos from Lakeside. But those were some scary scary people!!! But not very plentiful. A total of 75 people. Those 75 will be the listeners for this station, but sadly for this station it wont have building penetration into concrete and metal insane asylums!! So half the audience gone right there!

Actually the sports format has even lower ratings than the progressive format. Please try to keep the discussion respectful.

LOL!!

And actually RBA does bring up a good point, there might have been some better arby's but the bottom line was there was *no* advertising dollars at all and after three
years of welfare subsistence from CC San Diego, they had to pull the plug

Actually I was at that KLSD Protest and there were a couple hundred. 600KOGO loves his hate radio I guess

A) How much money was in the bag that was handed to Cliff Albert?
B) After three years of *no* advertising revenue being realized, what should have been the correct outcome in your view?
C) Was it a conspiracy that KLSD was flipped to sports?

The last three years of progressive talk had sales that were about three times as much as the billing leven during the sports years.

Formal testing is commencing, per letter(5/12/13) to FCC from Brown Broadcast Services. Currently in my area I get a carrier from western Lakeside. Don't know if KNSJ will overide that...
The 6025 antenna ($15,000) retails for $4,200 + $7k for the proof.

KNSG testing on-air

Playing etherial, soothing New Age instrumental music. Somewhat spotty Lakeside/Santee, driving around where KSDS Xlator interferes. In home, only the best portables receive it "listenable".
Although their CP calls for H&V polarization, they saved buck$ and went horiz. only.

Re: KNSG testing on-air

I may not agree with everything they're doing, but I do wish them well. If they succeed, then the entire SD radio marketplace wins.
