KNSJ-FM Back On The Air?

I was listening to KSDS's student radio substation a few weeks ago unless I was tipsy.

ETA: Aaaaaand the City Times page link for that no longer works. Bummer.

Currently, the HD2 is not on the air. There may be several reasons. One, the Radio, TV, and Film program at San Diego City College was merged into the new Film, Journalism, and Media production program, beginning with the fall 2024 semester. SDS (Student Designated Radio) was completely revamped into the new City Times Sound, under the journalism dept. CT Sounds is also currently not streaming.

Second, SDS was only on the air while school was in session. In fact SDS didn't broadcast at all during the pandemic. So, I picked up the phone and called KSDS. The receptionist didn't know anything at all and transferred me to the studio. The gentleman who answered said as far as he knows the HD2 channel is up and running. Huh? So bottom line, even KSDS has no idea what's going on.

The one I linked is accurate, it shows KSDS as not being on HD at all.
Yes, I wanted to add that KSDS has no HD signal. So, even the main HD is gone. Its one thing to shut off the HD2, but to go analog only is puzzling. Are there financial problems going on with KSDS? I'm sure they are not immune to what the rest of public radio is going through.

They have seriously whittled the entire broadcasting program, in spite that in its heydey they produced many students who have gone on to impressive careers in broadcasting even on a national level/scale.

Maybe they intend to actually cover the 60 dBu contour with a booster.
KNSJ's proposed new contour should allow them to put a booster on Mt. San Miguel. Looks like they're following the playbook of 96.1 Air One. 96.1 has their main transmitter way out in Campo, but their booster on Miguel makes them listenable in at least the southern half of the S.D. metro area.

The Dulzura NCE upgrade mentioned earlier in this thread has filed for a modification. It's dependent on the interpretation of the limits of an existing Mexican station. The request is for 7 kw ERP H-Only. Of further note is the EMF exposures far exceed the EPA limits so a fence has to be built around the transmitter site at some distance to keep everyone from roasting.

The proposed signal will miss most of Tijuana thanks to Otay Mountain's terrain blockage but certainly will reach into much of south-metro San Diego.

Summary at : https://fccdata.org/?facid=768226 (red-line)

Modification Here:
The FCC today dismissed the latest proposal for this troubled NCE upgrade. The Mexican emitters' dependencies in this application may have been too much.

And... KNSJ's existing signal was non-existent today. Seems like over the past year, they've been off the air more days than on.

Application dismissed 12/10/2024 for USA/Mexico Treaty violation with respect to third-adjacent channel Station XHKT-FM, Tecate, BN on Channel 203A. No letter sent.

The KNSJ antenna problems have become downright comical ...

Once again, this last week, KNSJ filed yet another silent STA. The reason, you guessed it.. winter weather has damaged the antenna on Monument Peak AGAIN!

Why do these idiots hang on to this transmitter location! Lord knows they have filed enough CP's to get off that peak and remedy the situation once and for all. But no, the insanity continues....

That's what happens when you have a whole gaggle of clods who pretend to be truly experienced professionals. They "always know better." At some point their insurance (if they have any) is going to say "transaction denied."

This is almost as bad as the LPFM Iowa City station whose antenna ices up constantly in the winter and knocks them off air.
