KNSJ off the air... again

I still see logos for "Justice 89.1", but I also see some for Music 89.1. Are they pivoting to new branding? I kind of hope so. The politics shows I've heard do suit me pretty well, but I'm more of a musichead than a politics junkie.

I'm listening right now and it is some kind of retro urban music hour. It's pretty interesting, but I need to tour their site a bit. I like traditional instrumental jazz, drone, indie and 80's/90's mainstream. Mostly I listen to Spotify, but I like KEXP, KUOI, WMNF and WNCW a lot (for those of you who are .org station fanatics. None of the above are in San Diego, but yay web, no?)

Activist San Diego the licensee of KNSJ-FM has a CP for 89.1 Dulzura. Their CP states:

Program tests for this noncommercial educational FM (NCE) construction permit will not commence with the facilities authorized herein until the licensee ceases operation of, and requests cancellation of station KNSJ (FM), Descanso, CA, Facility ID 172605. A license will not be granted for this station with the facilities authorized herein until KNSJ(FM), Descanso, CA, Facility ID 172605 has been cancelled. Under no circumstance will KNSJ(FM), Descanso, CA, Facility ID 172605 and Facility ID 768226 (this station) both be licensed. If the permittee does not agree with all of the conditions of this authorization, it must file a timely petition for reconsideration of the grant and return the construction permit to the Commission.

I saw an ad for a NCE FM CP in San Diego for sale. I wonder if this is this station?

Where is it listed?

I think the other "facility" is going to be for the frequency in Ramona that they abandoned after the Pala Indian tribe expressed serious objection to Activist San Diego running a radio transmitter for the station on tribal land. There is a message thread on this. Activist San Diego allegedly fudged the engineering reports for the Ramona station which raised the attention of the tribal elders.

The for sale listing was in RadioTVDeals.com. I wonder if they can actually sell the CP without it being on the air. The KUMI-FM license they filed for in Romana stated they had constructed it. The said they had installed solar panels. Turns out it was on tribal lands and they had no permission to construct anything. Their engineer and surveyor stated under they had constructed when they had not. Read all about it on:

Exactly what I wrote.

So you're saying the exhibit from the installing engineer Raghavan Jayakumar had lied in the narrative explaining how the antenna was installed?

This effort to change the city of license from Descanso to Dulzura sounds like they're trying to move their transmitter closer to San Diego.

Why they at all are pushing having a terrestrial radio at all is beyond me when they would save a lot of money and have a bigger reach by streaming. Amateur hour prevails over there.

If "Social Justice" KNSJ-FM was really concerned about global climate warming destruction change they would cease attempting to put out a terrestrial signal. Total waste of electricity to broadcast to desert lizards.

I'm listening online now and there is some 80's brit pop, which I love. But boy is this site ever a hot mess. I can't locate a playlist, for instance.

ETA: The show appears to be "Strangers in a Fire" Radio.

ETAA: It now seems to be repeating the same song consecutively at least three times by now. Again, no playist, so I don't know what song. Just a lot of bass and repetitive percussion.

You think the site is a "hot mess," you should see some of the people behind the equipment and programming.

They consult with "professionals," but then they tell the professionals how they do things. Totally bizarre operation.

It's a station I want to like, because I am a fan of other terrestrial radio stations, mostly in the community radio and college radio veins, of which this is the former. KEXP, KUOI, WMNF, etc., all "dot orgs". But every single one of them is outside this radio region. C'mon, San Diego.

They are off the air again.
KNSJ (FM) DESCANSO, CALIF REQUEST FOR SILENT STA
Activist San Diego (“ASD”), licensee of NCE-FM KNSJ, here requests Silent STA for KNSJ due to antenna damage.

Background: Recently the licensee’s tower owner permitted a third party to install an antenna above KNSJ’s antenna. On December 31, 2022 KNSJ’s antenna was damaged by the falling of ice onto KNSJ’s antenna from this new antenna. ASD repaired the broken elements. Subsequently, another storm mid/late-January imparted further ice damage to the antenna to a point to where the directional antenna was inoperable. On February 6, 2023 ASD sent Victoria McCauley a letter informing the FCC that the station hadbeenknockedofftheairandthestationwassilent(Attachment, below). ASD’s directional antenna is built upon a customized 8-element Shively Labs Model 6025 log periodic antenna in a slant position. ASD’s plan was to order the replacement parts from Shively and attempt to get on the air promptly. Unfortunately ASD uncovered that on January 5 Howell Laboratories, Inc., the parent company of Shively Labs, released a memo to all customers stating that Howell was exiting the broadcast antenna manufacturing business and was looking for a buyer for Shively. It was soon found that Shively was not actively processing orders so ASD would need to wait until further notice. ASD has been working on the matter and hopes to return to the air as soon as possible.

Logical solution: send the specs to another antenna manufacturer for a quote.
Their solution: "work on the matter".

Find a site that much easier to be at. Too much bad weather at Monument Peak east of San Diego. They do have a CP to build a new station on 89.1 closer to San Diego. There is also a CP for another new FM currently to Calvary Chapel of Hawaii at the same site as KNSJ is at now. Maybe there is more to the story? Their web site does not say they are off the air.

This is the same group that had a CP for KUMI-FM and misled the FCC by saying they built it but actually did not.

We'll see how long that lasts. Their studios were in a rickety old house in the middle of San Diego's City Heights area.
Their management is as solid on quicksand as KPFK/Pacifica's management. What's the point these days when they apparently are having major antenna problems.

They have convinced themselves that they are "professionals" when they are not.
I remember being at a board meeting when someone suggested that the on air staff be unionized. That went down as well as rotten fish on the banks of San Diego Bay.
