It perhaps bears mentioning that KSNJ radio, a station which has absolutely no audience is celebrating one year "on the air," if you can count black widows, tarantulas, and geckos as an audience. From what I've heard, the one year has brought the station's founder and president being kicked out (he worked eight years to put the station on the air), as well as several "board members" being kicked out in what has sounded like a coup de etat on the part of a gang of four. And still, there is really no signal in San Diego because the antenna is in Descanso with very low power.

(maybe $8,000 ,w/ 400 attendees) into KNSJ for 4 months. The Park operator charges $175/hr (plus 2hr cleanup) and $85 for security.

At best, I think they had about 200 people at last year's "fundraiser."
KNSJ not living up to their promises? That's the charge made against them in a letter to KNSJ from East County Magazine,
a supporter, and contributor whose news show is heard on KNSJ.

In the July 2013 Chariot Fire the station did go live and I reported on the fire on Mt. Laguna. For a few weeks, KNSJ aired our alerts with a delay of an hour or so, promising to improve technology to get real live alerts. Later KNSJ stopped airing wildfire alerts at all. I’ve pleaded with KNSJ to air Viejas Wildfire Alerts as promised, which we offer them free, to save lives and keep you safe. In the backcountry when power lines burn and some have no cell service, battery-powered radio is often the only way to get news during fires.
KNSJ’s CEO says having the federal emergency broadcast system in place is enough, but it’s not. It wasn’t activated during recent fires in East County. KNSJ's CEO and Board refuse to even guarantee a start date for alerts or an exact dollar figure that would guarantee these would air. They ask for more money, without delivering on promises made to donors who already gave to support getting alerts on the air. Much ado about nothing: they are not airing messages, but they don't have a mountain community audience anyway, so there's no real damage here.
Uhmmm...they don't have an audience at all, the truth be known. Even my most devout left-wing friends have never heard of the station, much less have ever heard it. They do sometimes acknowledge that they don't have much broadcast coverage, but then go back to backstabbing each other. Even San Diego State's KCR radio has a larger audience!

Hello, my name is Kali. I have my own gripes about this station right now, however the below letter was sent to me by a board member, but asked to be shared anonymously. I thought this would be a good place for it. . His gripes are consistent with what I experienced at ASD - sexism, mysogeny, patriarchy, elitism, and just straight up using and using and abusing people.
Dear Friends,
Activist San Diego is a nonprofit charitable organization committed to serving the “under represented” voices in San Diego. ASD was awarded the last FCC full-power FM license to provide public service broadcasting to East County San Diego to fill a void in the back country. There is good reason for KNSJ’s transmitter to be on Mt. Laguna and its designated City is Descanso and required to have a headquarters within 25 miles of Descanso.
The purpose, mission and direction of ASD has been hijacked by a handful of individuals for their own purposes using intimidation, bullying, manipulation and illegal means to get their way. There is nothing democratic about the way the April 7th meeting was conducted. For the President of the Board of Directors to shut down the voices of hard working East County volunteers while stacking the Board with sycophants is reprehensible. Even when the self-appointed Board President abused women who dared speak up - two women on the Board shamefully refused to stand up to the abusive bully even to support Board member Marilyon who courageously stood her ground in the face of shameful personal attacks.
The leaders of this cabal have refused to allow an examination of the books in spite of the inconsistencies and conflicting reports. The leaders have refused to allow any oversight at all. For months I have been calling for an independent review of the finances, conflicts of interest and a performance review of the CEO. All have been denied.
Since when do we turn over control of our nonprofit to a 300 pound bully who just a few election cycles back ran for City Council as a conservative Republican, signed the right-wing Grover Norquist “no new taxes” pledge and worked with Republican Operatives to get himself elected.
Since when do we allow a “Board Member” who never attends meetings and who lives in LA to propose personnel changes while being coached behind the scenes by the CEO on the phone?
Since when do we allow the board president to shout-down and expel the producer of 120 original news programs – each taking about ten hours to produce?
Why is Monsoor (who never attends meetings) who contributes only his opinions be allowed to vote when Miriam who has contributed approximately 1,200 hours producing the only show on KNSJ that complies with our FCC license is not allowed to even speak?
Since when do we expel members who voice dissent?
If any of this bothers you – join me in seeking help from the Attorney General’s Office to take back KNSJ for the people it was intended. I know Kamala Harris and she is an advocate for fair and balanced media. Below is a link to the AG’s complaint form. You can submit anonymously if you are intimidated at this time. We have minutes from the meeting and an audio recording to prove the abusive behavior. Write a personal letter to Kamala Harris asking her to intervene.

Sounds like Pacifica Radio: the politics are so bitter because the stakes are so small.
The problem is that they don't have any true professionals running the place, just a bunch of amateurs who think they are professionals and programming and running a radio station is "so easy." And what true broadcast professional would want to put up with all of the infighting and lawsuits which they have already filed against each other in a year's operation.
Like so many times with those of the liberal ilk, they don't see the forest for the trees. I always say that the real work in broadcasting is all of the preparation for being on the air, being on the air is the easy part. Their distribution (coverage) is terrible and inconsistent around San Diego County which affects fundraising (which has been very problematic), they are inconsistent on their program mission. I keep wondering when Activist San Diego will end up pulling the plug on the station. With so much politics and infighting, should they end up with a serious budget shortfall, their sponsorship of KNSJ the station will surely end.
