KNTY -STILL- off the air

Just got back from vacation, I guess The Wolf has been off the air since the storm a few days ago.

Heard from a friend that the folks over there are sh!%*ing themselves.

They're straight up screwed in the PPM book.

They've been off mornings and on during PM drive the past couple days. I read somewhere they were off in the morning hours due to icing on the tower.

Ow...That has got to hurt.

Wow! Ice on the antenna elements. Why don't engineers build with heated elements? Probably the same reason I saw a Prius with chains in the Sierra Foothills! You can run with ice on the elements. You just have to run at a very reduced power. My last full-time radio station had a brilliant engineer. He used the remote control system to reduce power. One phone call, and a couple touch tones, and the transmitter would reduce power.

De-icing systems do exist. We had one on our 800 foot tower on a very big hill back in Massachusetts and came in handy during those big nor-easter snow storms or nights with freezing rain. A simple push of 'channel 9' and 'raise' brought this well thought out contraption to life. Handy for avoiding that pesty VSWR issue while keeping us at 50,000 watts. Hope KNTY engineering considers this investment.

If they didn't build de-icers in to begin with, they're much harder to add later. Also, different antennas have different characteristics when confronted with ice, and theirs is a directional antenna - which complicates things. Without knowing the whole story, we're just speculating. But KNTY is about 2000 feet above sea level. So I would think they would have designed that facility with Winter in mind.

After looking at radio-locator, their transmitter must be in the Sierra Foothills. Yes, it does get snow and ice there.

It wasn't ice on the antennas -- it was ice on the road and a broken generator. They couldn't get a big generator up there because the road (a steep road, at that) was icy. They waited until it was safe, then got a rented 45 kW generator up there.

Or so I heard.

No power huh? They could have made it up there with a snowcat guy I know. He is the best in the Sierra Nevada. He has a great snowcat, which could have dragged a genset up there. He can even has a ski set up to replace trailer wheels. His name is Bill Blass. I can't remember his company name at the moment...
