KNUC 98.9 has filed for a call letter change

This playlist looks similar to KPND Sandpoint/Coeur D'Alene, also an AAA. I hope it works out for 98.9!
In fact, the hipster clothing shops in Fremont/Ballard/West Seattle might put this station on if it gets enough traction and promotion ;-)
Not to mention, those that still miss The Mountain.

With Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun" being the second song played post launch, I wonder if anyone thought Rock 98.9 was making a cameo? 🥸

I'm going to stick my neck out here and say, that Classic Alternative is ripe for today's AAA audience. As the original Alternative audience ages, AAA should be the next step for those who still want their Classic Alternative fix, but also like current music.

Kind of already being done at KNDD. In fact I see some playlist similarities between KPNW and KNDD.

Someone mentioned "Black Hole Sun," and that's in medium rotation at KNDD.

However KNDD doesn't go back as far with their gold.

This is why I advocate for a more current/recurrent based Alternative format. If the (corporate) Alternative format keeps to it's current classic course, it will die eventually from lack of audience.

Or it will evolve into a version of AAA, which is what you're proposing.

We don't need to cling to old formats. If evolution is better, and there's audience there, then maybe that's the proper course.

VALLEY104.9 LP (valley1049.org) In Duvall has been serving AAA since 2016. And doing it quite well. We got online listeners well beyond our Duvall, Carnation, Snoqualmie Valley FM sticknal.

A no brainer format for Seattle. Lets see if they can start out good and then water it down like KMTT did to their whisky after a few years?
KEXP is all over the rap hop map. A tighter no rap AAA format will cater to the 50+ crowd. Yep, the ones with $!

As far as AAA evolving, originally Classic rock and artists from the 60's and 70's were a staple, along with Alternative. And giving airplay to groups like The Grateful Dead that weren't being heard elsewhere. There's a lot less of it now on AAA, and as far as KPNW, just from listening only have heard Tom Petty (late 80's). I've always thought it was cool to be able to hear a little played Jimi Hendrix tune thrown in with White Reaper or Wilco. I viewed it as giving a nod and paying homage to the past.

I know WXRT still does that. After a full 24 hours since the launch, will have go over the playlist to see how far back KPNW is willing to go

Well they played Angel by Hendrix today. Also Jessica by the Allman Brothers and Do It Again by Steely Dan.

A varied assortment of music in the "Welcome to 98.9 KPNW" promo on You Tube...

Jimmy Cliff--I Can See Clearly Now
Talking Heads--Once in A Lifetime
Adele--Rumour Has It
Fleetwood Mac--Dreams
Lizzo--It's About Damn Time

And a few others I couldn't identify. So Adele and Lizzo are AAA? I guess they are if you don't want to sound too hip for the room. The people pictured with headphones listening to KPNW-FM are female and male, white and black.

I'm really going to enjoy seeing if this works in the ratings. It's NOT a cookie-cutter roll out. Reminds me a little of when 94.7 The Wave premiered in LA. Hubbard is not just slapping on some pre-fab format. That video shows the company took some time to research and program the right approach. Interesting that those involved kept it under wraps until its debut!

That's good! Have only been able to listen a little bit here and there...now if I heard them play Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band,, that would truly be an "Oh-WOW" moment. Only heard them played once on radio, KCSN/KSBR, before the rebranding.

Adele gets a lot of AAA airplay, but Lizzo???

This new station 98.9 KPNW targets stereotypical WHITE liberal hipsters who shops at Whole Paycheck, or Co-Op independent grocery stores. Tends to eat vegan or vegetarian, organic, Gluten Free or non GMO foods. Drives a Subaru. Drinks Starbucks or independent fair trade coffee. Tries ethnic foods and pretends to be expert on it. Shops around Capitol Hill, Ballard, Wallingford, and or Capitol Hill. Listens to independent local artists.

AAA is actually where I first heard Lizzo (non-comm AAA, but still). Back in the '90s, AAA stations leaned heavily on the classic rock side of the format, with a lot of Bob Dylan or Grateful Dead or Neil Young. "Wow" tracks would be something from Little Feat. Now, and this is mostly in the non-commercial realm, an AAA station will be all over the musical map and time frame. I wonder if KPNW is choosing that classic rock side, but updated for 2023.
