KNUZ

Just curious. Since I am not from Houston, and with call letters like KNUZ,
did they ever have an all-news format?

Old Chicago

In it's final incarnation it was all news before the KQUE standards format was shifted to KNUZ. Since it's early days in the late 1940s, there was a strong emphasis on news in it's formats of country, Top 40 and oldies.

KNUZ started off I believe as a Beautiful Music format than in the late 60s it became Top 40 but heavy emphasis on News.

Fast foward to 1991 KNUZ was Oldies and News Talk, they stopped the Oldies format and became News-Opinon when KHJS 106.9 Jazz flipped to KKHU known as You 106.9 see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XB52okVPzfw as a Talk and Oldies format on FM the short lived You lasted 1 year until Z-Rock and KKZR calls made it's return on 106.9
In 1997 when KKPN 102.9 The Planet launced as Modern Hits, KNUZ 1230AM was history and became KQUE AM 1230. See
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBlIClDwzD8 and the end of the vid has the Planet jingle right before Charles Chavez on KJOJ.

Will, did you read the post from me above you? KNUZ started in the late 1940s. It was NEVER a beautiful music station. At one time it was Houston's only real Top 40 station until 610 KLBS became KILT and started with its Top 40 format in 1957. In 1973, KNUZ flipped to "Country Fresh Kay News" It remained country until FM 100 KILT flipped to country. At that time, KNUZ flipped to the "Roots Of Rock 'N Roll, right up to the time it flipped to all news and talk.
