What is up with their picture and sound quality? Its the worse. Its been this way for years. Does anyone else notice the difference between Channel 51 and other Local Channels?

If you ever saw the inside of their facilities, you'd know why. They use extremely old equipment. They basically have people with little or no TV experience working for them. They don't pay them anywhere near the market value. I'm not even sure they provide benefits.

It's really sad to think about them if they didn't have the Astros & Rockets to give them some sort of clout.

At least, 55's imaging and presentation is decent. KNWS is like watching TV from about 25 years ago. <P ID="signature">______________

Very true! I think the old KRIV and KHTV back in the day had better quality over all.. haha!

Hell, channel 67 had better quality before going all-home shopping (now Telefutura).

Well, I don't know about that...at least "The SuperStar, KTHT-TV 67" wasn't gorged full of infomercials like 51 is. I remember the top of the line for 67 was reruns of "The Flying Nun." I recall their movie package was pretty lame, for the most part...mostly obscure "B" movies.

Would be interesting if anyone could dig up a typical program schedule for KTHT-TV (perhaps out of the Chronicle or Post archives.) They were on for only eight months, January to September of 1986 before flipping to Home Shopping Network KHSH. I remember watching the initial transmitter testing (excellent signal) and the official launch, a video montage with 70's group America's "Lonely People" as the music bed.

Somewhere around the house I have an old tape with the updated 1986 version of "Cosmos" which I recorded off of 67. Unfortunately it's on Beta, and my old Beta player has been gathering dust in the garage for some years now...don't know if it even still works. Would be interesting to see the 67 imaging and promos again.

I used to work for both KHTV and KRIV before and after both stations upgraded their facilities and signals. Even before both upgrades the stations ran on 1". It looks like Ch 51 is operating on 3/4". That's the equivalent of a beta max machine or 8-track. Their live broadcast signals come in fuzzy on my DirectTV signal coming to my clear-as-a-bell DLP TV. Now that the tube is on the satellite roster both the Rockets and Astros should reconsider broadcasting there. If you remember the Rockets originally aired on the Tube after they were off of Channel 39. They correctly ended that relationship just weeks after they started because most of Houston south of 1960 could not pick up their signal. Whatever the problem is, Doug Johnson paid very little for the station compared to what he could get today for the license. He should do everyone a favor and sell it and have someone else upgrade the facility and signal.

sounds like The Tube is a rim-shot! No room for them in Missouri City to get a city grade signal?

Yes, for now the analog signal on Channel 55 is a rim-shot, but KTBU-DT operates from Missouri City on Channel 42.

Johnson is trying to sell both KNWS Houston and all-infomerical KLDT Lake Dallas (TV 55/DT 54 in DFW).

Any idea of how much money he hopes to get for these stations?
