KNWS Channel 51 Houston

Is this channel actually disappering? I see on Direct Tv that it says THIS CHANNEL IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE. Is this the case only on Direct Tv or on channel 51 period? Right now they're have commercial programing.

That must be just you. Im seeing Rosanne on 51 right now as we speak, and I have comcast.

Maybe their retransmission deal with D* is about to expire. No big loss.

Channel 51 has one big thing going with Comcast and it's very valuable. As channel 2 on Comcast, its the default channel that pops on first when you turn your cable box on. It probably has more 2-second viewers in Houston than any other station.

There's probably a way to program your cable box so that another channel is the first to come on but I haven't gotten around to figuring that out yet. I just switched from AT&T to Comcast. (It's another story but I must say that AT&T's basic lineup in Houston is far superior to Comcast's but those "people" at AT&T couldn't ... Oh well, that's a topic for another thread.)

They should just pull the plug. Their fall lineup, if you can call it that, is court shows from 5-7 p.m., Cold Case at 7, an hour of infomercials at 8, and Entertainment Studios and Cheaters from 9 to 10. Infomercials the rest of the day. They are now up to around 20 hours of infomercials each day. Total abuse of must-carry.

FYI-- I did a story on phantom power use... gadgets that use power even when you think they're off. Cable and satellite boxes were a big offender. The power light may go out and it may stop feeding video to your TV, but the electronics inside remain hot and booted up waiting for your next remote control command. Power consumption is essentially the same whether the boxes are on or off.

If you unplug it, when you turn it back on you'll find that all channels in the guide have the same show on, "To Be Announced." Of course, i discovered that during a recent power failure.

I'd like to note that this is usually not true of the $40-$70 converter boxes used to watch OTA DTV on old analog-only TVs. They generally use considerably less power when off.

Their power-off use still isn't zero, though. If you want to shut them off completely, you'll need to plug them into a switched outlet, such as a power strip. For remote power control, something like an X-10 appliance module and controller could be used.

Unfortunately, some set-top boxes don't take well to having their power shut off. You'll just have to experiment and see.

For instance, one of mine will forget the channels I deleted after the last scan, forcing me to delete them all over again. This is so annoying I have it plugged into a battery backup in case of a power failure!

KNWS (and sister station KLDT) were sold in bankruptcy court to a Spanish language broadcaster quite a few months ago. Due to questions regarding excessive foreign control of the proposed licensee, the sale has been delayed -- but I'm sure that the original expectation was that the sale would be consummated by now and the English language programming replaced by Azteca America programming. That being the case, why would they invest in new programming that could get yanked at any time if/when the sale closes?

Essentially, KNWS (and KLDT) are stuck in limbo, buying time until a sale closes.
