KNX 1070 Drops The Weather Channel for Weather from CBS 2

I have noticed that as of this past Monday (May 10), KNX 1070 no longer uses The Weather Channel for its weather forecasts after Traffic on the Fives. Instead, they rely on CBS 2/KCAL 9's meteorologists for weather forecasts. Why?

Who owns KNX? The Weather Channel or CBS?

It's good cross promotion and it's likely the content is just as good and the delivery more flexible.

Makes much more sense for KNX to use a local LA TV station anyway than the Atlanta-based Weather Channel. Great move on KNX's part.

CBS.

#1 reason: They can use their TV station talent for free. They have to pay for The Weather Channel.

#2 reason: It's cross-promotion of their TV sister. The Weather Channel is owned by NBCUniversal and is turning to NBC affiliates more and more for local coverage of national weather events. If KNX strengthens The Weather Channel's brand, they're indirectly supporting KNBC, Channel 4 when they own KCBS, Channel 2 (and KCAL-9).

In many markets, especially in the Midwest where weather is more important than traffic reports many radio stations use the local TV station's weather facilities. The reason being that it is more current and local. Almost all TV stations have the latest radar technology and at least one actual meteorologist on staff. If the TV and radio stations are co-owned that is only another bonus to the bottom line.

If you miss the Weather Channel they are still available on your cable service and the internet.

By the way the first local TV and radio stations to have their own radar with an on staff meteorologist were WLW and WLWT, channel five in Cincinnati with a man named Tony Sands. They used an actual radar screen console on the set.

I remember several years ago when KNX had a weather
service from Seattl, probably 1 of the best,
as they really understood weather, not just
reported.
I have not been impressed with Weather
Channel, but years ago I really
liked Accu Weather, as they reacted
to what was actually happening.
When I lived in Jersey they seemed
most accurate
