KNX 1070 Los Angeles, CA heard in Newfoundland again

Heard 1070 KNX Los Angeles this morning at 10:15 UTC with CBS and KNX ID's news, weather

5524 kilometers / 3430 miles from my QTH in Newfoundland

BEAUTIFUL!

I'd be shocked to receive L.A. that far East. Super catch! :)

Hey guys, had a tentive on KNX this morning also, but a bit later at 0930z. Received them before, so I know its
possible THIS far East (N. Ireland).

Good DX, gentlemen. Consider how much clearer the catch would be if KNX turned off it's Digital(IBOC) system
@ night..

This morning KNX was logged using a Yaesu FRG-100 w/ 320' wire and it was also audible on a Sony SRF-M37W Ultralight Radio (barefoot, with only the tiny ferrite rod antenna inside)

This is the 3rd time or so I have heard KNX from here in Newfoundland,

I recently also heard XEPE in Tecate/ San Diego CA on 1700 from here as well using same equipment

Wowzers! Great catch(es)!

Where are you in Newfoundland? Along the coast somewhere? From here, south of Ottawa ON, I've gotten great catches to my east, but the west proves to be a bigger challenge. I wonder if it's because I'm just on the eastern edge on the 'Canadian Shield'. I'm not very technical, but I do believe the ground it-self may be playing a role???

Well *I* am wondering, if this was an over-the-Pole kinda deal.....

After all, there are 1070's galore in the Eastern US....

Remember, most of the stations on at night on 1070 protect the two (old classification) Class 1-B clears, CBA and KNX. So, in Newfoundland, a DXer benefits from every station except KNX protecting the New Brunswick 1-B assignment.

And all of them aim away from the Maritimes.

I read you.....in that case, KNBR 680 can't be that far behind.....

Hello BG

I am overlooking the ocean below from high above in a small community called Bristol's Hope which is about 70 miles by highway, 40 miles across the water from St. John's.
There are a number of factors which attribute to what can be heard in certain areas as you mentioned , ground, near water etc all play a part.
I live in a remote area so RF noise is not a problem either.
even compared to St. John's, the reception is very different here.
Bermuda on 1160 is a unique example, hardly ever heard there, almost nightly here.
KSL Salt Lake City completely opposite of the above mentioned.

Hello MarioMania

So far KNX is the only California station I have been able to log from here in Newfoundland.
KFI on 640 would definitely be a tougher target as a CBC station in St. John's dominates the dial here. Would likely have to catch it underneath or if CBC was off sometime.

A while back I did manage to hear KRPI in Ferndale Washington on 1550 during their DX test.

AM 640 in St. John's might "pull a CBL Toronto" in the future; i.e., move to FM and free up 640 temporarily. However, that could be years from now. Talk 640 in Toronto might be in the way of a KFI catch as well, as CJOB 680 Winnipeg/CFTR 680 Toronto might hamper a shot at KNBR, due to the pattern to the north.

That being said, I was looking at a flat world map....wondering if KENI 650 in Anchorage with 50k ND might be possible this winter for our Newfoundland DXer! (I'd say KFQD 750 also, but I believe there is still a 750 in NL.)

That night I think was 2/22/12. What an amazing night for Eastern DX! WBBM was way over KKOH and over 3x the distance of Reno; WJR 760 listenable levels; 830 WCCO at very listenable level; and of course finally getting Cuba with Radio Rebelde on 670 from Arroyo Grande at 2700+ miles! That made my night...

Transcontinental, Transatlantic.... Great catches, guys. Congratulations.

And, I couldn't even snag it last week in Omaha! ???
