KNX Los Angeles and KCBS San Francisco to Simulcast Overnight Programming

What happened before that was a merging of the news departments at WCBS and WINS. But yes, that's a great example, and listeners complained about that too. This is a big problem, and can't be solved by retaining the status quo. The only way to maintain staffing is to increase revenue, and the only option these stations have to do that is add more commercials. Or hold the line on salaries. Who wants to vote for that?
Do you believe KNX and KCBS make money from 9 PM-5 AM?

Do you believe KNX and KCBS make money from 9 PM-5 AM?

Hard to say. What we know is that the audience during that time is a fraction of what it is during the day. So they likely make a lot less money during those hours. We also know that very few stations in either market have local programming during that time. So that should indicate there's no real money during those hours. Would you agree?

I've been thinking KCBS has been starting to sound stale and "cheap" lately. I'm worried this will make it worse, because when I visit the East Bay, I often drive home fairly late, and I usually listen to KCBS to catch up on what's going on, get traffic and weather, etc. I usually also listen after 9 PM, so if now it's going to not even carry SF Bay Area news (is it? I guess I can tune in and find out), it's one less reason to listen.

Oh, well.

Bob Brill has not anchored his weekend evening shifts either Saturday or Sunday, but I did just hear a package he recorded tonight amidst the Reiner coverage.

If both the overnight anchors (Art Sanders and Bob Brill) are still working at KNX, what is the cost savings on the combined newscast? Getting rid of the KNX overnight editor? That's it?

I'll never fully understand LA freeway nomenclature....

Although San Francisco can boast that it has a wrong way concurrency (East/West 80 and West/East 580 share an alignment for a stretch in Berkeley).

Alright, at 11PM KNX went into canned programming - Eye on Travel w/ Peter Greenberg. This has been running late on Sundays in this slot for years.

Then at 11:57PM, Bob Brill (who did not anchor the evening block) came on with a short 3 minute newscast, then the KNX station ID, a tease from Bob for the overnight and then at midnight the KCBS station ID and into CBS.

One faux pas - the very young KCBS anchor tonight Danny DeCrescenzo introduced the Rob Reiner story and a package from KNX's legendary crime reporter, Pete Demetrio, and mispronounced his last name.

I feel like you should get a primer on the reporter names, at a minimum.

If Audacy is running KCBS programming on KNX as part of this simulcast, then I suppose, while I loathe the continued cheapening of radio with shenanigans like this, one positive aspect is that it would actually ease the late night reception problems in the far North Bay that have plagued KCBS since forever (KCBS is often weak with lots of fading, especially in the hills and valleys, but KNX is more or less clear as a bell by comparison, despite being 600 miles away).

I also note that 12AM-6AM happens to be when KCBS' reception tends to be at its worst. I wonder if Audacy considered this when they decided to do the overnight simulcast?

Wouldn't be the first time that happened, according to Pete, who I have been acquainted with for over three decades at this point.

He also says that misspelling his name happens constantly, as you just proved. (The most common error is the one you made ... it has a "u" at the end ... but congrats on getting the rest of it perfect!)

I've heard both Art Sanders and Bob Brill filling in for Chris Sedens in the evening slot this week, so they're both still at KNX.

Additionally, retired KPCC anchor Susanne Whatley is getting some reps during PM drive today.

Its seems counterintuitive that if the overnight simulcast was for cost cutting that both overnight anchors are still working at KNX in some capacity, and they're taking on more talent (even if just on a freelance basis).
