KNX Los Angeles received in Tampa!

Well, all that waiting and waiting finally paid off. This is my best catch yet in my video series.

After listening for almost two hours tonight, KNX popped in and was slightly stronger than WAPI at the time.

It's not too strong a signal but listen closely. They are giving a traffic report and you hear him mention Los Angeles, the Santa Monica Freeway, and the 405.

Right as the video is about to end, he says "KNX1070.com".

Congratulations Gar that's quite a haul especially when you consider the mess of stations on 1070. Don Mussel reported hearing KNX in American Samoa a few nights ago. That's 4,500 miles west of LA. When you consider that you are 2,000+ miles east, that's quite a spread of coverage for KNX.

My congratulations as well! That was an awesome catch! Great to see that it's still possible to pick up coast-to-coast dx if you are persistent enough.

Damn nice catch there! I also am happy to see that you did it with the Sangean, it gives me hope that I might get some great DX like that on mine someday.

Good catch Gar and a thumbs up for the Sangean too! ;D

Good for you. Great catch. I heard a Lakers B'ball game on 1070 the other night, I thought it may be KNX, but when I turned the stream on it was some talk show. Does anyone know if they carry the Lakers on air but can't on the web? Thanks.

KNX is all news 24/7. They have no play by play.

Getting KNX in Tampa is probably the better catch. In American Somoa, all the stations in the region are on 9 KHz spacing, so 1070 is pretty clear. In Tampa, there is all kinds of interferance on 1070, so it's a really fine catch!

Thanks, everyone.

KNX was there for almost an hour last night, though the signal varied but the problem was when WAPI would often come in too strong.

For the longest time, I was looking for KFI but it got frustrating, especially with that Cuban station which was impossible to null out most of the time.

Like I said in the other thread about 1070, I heard a KNX ID a couple nights earlier when I was falling asleep after listening for so long hearing nothing but it never came back during the time I stayed awake to see if I could get it again.

I don't know what to look for next.

What to look for next? ?'s for gar:
Gar-U still trying for 660 Window Rock and 770 in Alb?? Any others now that you got 2 LA stations from the Tampa bay area??
NEXT time in SW Fla I'm gonna take out the GE combo AM-FM 8 track out of the shed (real good manual tuner) sit outside with a tropical drink and notebook on a warm nite and see what can be caught.
Again-great catch!

Look east, gar, look east! You should be getting some really nice TAs from your location. ;D

BTW, which model Sangean do you have and what antenna setup do you use?

I've made attempts to hear 660 from Window Rock and 770 KKOB but the Cuban and other Spanish stations are too strong.

Heck, it's a good night if I can even hear WFAN and WABC anymore. :(

I have the PR-D5 and I don't use any antenna set up at all, just the internal antenna built in the radio.

Lakers games are carried locally in LA on KSPN-710 (formerly KMPC).
No way in hell can you DX that cupcake candle at night.
Clear KDWN-720 in Las Vegas buries it after sundown.

Now watch, Gar -- KNX will be a pest!

You'll be trying for, say, WKOK Sunbuy PA (10,000/1000), or that little 250-watter in Stirling NJ, and there will be many oaths as KNX covers up every possible ID.

LOL! Nice catch. Good perserverence, and best of ther Holidays!

I'm fairly sure I've had KNX 2-3 times during the last week or so. Haven't been able to confirm or identify, however. It used to be a relatively easy catch here in the Chicago area. I've actually been trying off & on for the past few months, but it always seems to be close, but no cigar.

KMPC was rather regularly heard by me in NE Ohio in the early 60's when WOR, KBTR and WHB were on their silent periods and after Dultuth and Amarillo signed off. KIRO generally was not a pest unless there was one of those rare openings that brought in Vancouver, Nanaimo, Blaine, Seattle, Spokane, etc.

KMPC was mission impossible for me growing up less than 20 miles from WGN's stick. KNX and KFI weren't exactly regulars, but relatively easy...with KFI being the easier of the two by virtue of having 640 all to itself. I did catch KMPC once in college in Iowa one morning...right before WHB powered up. Old Hallicrafters rig with antenna wire wound around a water pipe.

In my latest attempts to see if I can still catch KNX, I'm using my "ancient" DX 440, aimed at such an angle as to null Indianapolis and Madison. Unfortunately this angle also provides a path for CHOK and (what used to be) KFDI. What I've been hearing are bits and pieces of what sounds like news (as opposed to a talk show), but I've not heard what I'm listening for....either an ID, or other mention of the call letters, or at least the sounder which goes into traffic and weather (something I think might be able to cut through the noise). Also have not been able to make out a CBS hourly newscast intro. So far the clearest I've been able to hear has been a piece of a mortgage re-fi ad. Those things are staples of So-Cal radio, but since what I heard wasn't "California-specific" its not quite enough for me to be certain.

I believe that that's a good little DX machine. Congrats on the catch, man!
