I spent several hours on 1070 last night after being inspired by this thread but could not get past CHOK. So I thought I'd give it another shot tonight. No more than 30 seconds after turning the radio on, I was a bit shocked at what I was recording:

KNX coming through very clear with a LA traffic report at 11:45pm over both Sarnia & Madison. An 1,840 mile catch for me and my first California logging since hearing KFI back in the 1980s.
Great catch over there in Michigan! Even more distant grab of KNX than those of us near Chicago. That's fantastic.
I will say (and honestly, it's not meant to be boastful) that Christmas night featured some truly outstanding east-west propagation because my fade ins of KNX were so clear that it was unbelievable. Too bad I lack your skills and foresight with recording because you guys would have been blown away by just how strong of a signal I had for 6 or 7 minutes. Even a Walkman could have picked it up! Much louder even than in Kilocat's MP3 recording. At one point it was surreal to sit on my deck with the radio, watching it snow, and hearing the weather report so clearly from LA! Just got lucky, I guess - and I was using a 'barefoot' E5....no special gear at all. If I can get that lucky, surely others can too. At least around this time of year.
Perhaps you can also try for KNBR as cyberdad suggested. From my location, that one is absolutely hopeless thanks to a very strong WSCR and it's IBOC blast. But, from a more quiet location like W. Michigan, perhaps you could have a real shot at it.

Congratulations on some amazing stuff. You certainly got a lot more of KNX than I did. As stated earlier, all I got was the sounder. As unmistakable as that was, I couldn't make out anything else. As for CFAC, I wouldn't have thought it would be doable here, but based on your success, I think I'll give it a shot.
Thanks! Yes, by all means, try for CFAC. My hint was that KOA was pounding in like a local that night. When I went to 960, CFAC was really strong and loud and - for a while - very steady. It faded out later, but was a lot more consistent than the "hit and run" I got out of KNX. Normally, I get a mish-mash of very weak signals on 960, including positively Id'd KZIM Cape Girardeau, MO, and WTCH Shawano, WI (they're the ones with the country format). The other night, CFAC had the channel all to itself for some reason.
My feeling is that we have favorable propagation thanks to the time of year (winter solstice) that NOW is the time to try for all of these long distance catches.
