KNX: Traffic on the 5's

KNX has quietly re-configured is newswheel, with business at 10 and 40, sports at 12 and 42, and traffic on the 5's. My take is that without the necessary promotion to train users where they can find their desired elements, the listen longer approach that KNX seems to be taking won't work. I believe the station has to explain in new promos what "extended traffic" means, because to my ear, sometimes their extended traffic segments seem quite short, and the traffic on the 5s positioning seems to be used inconsistently.

Sidebar - I'm just back from NYC and observed several people and how they used WCBS and 1010 WINS there much more as appointment radio ("traffic and transit on the ones") with lots of stickiness meaning that they came in for the traffic or weather (a factor there that drives listener tune-in unlike here) and often stayed around for the remainder of the newscast.
______________
Peace is the word, and the Voice of the Peace is THE station, 24 hours a day. (Tribute to the VOP 1540 which broadcast for 20 years in the Eastern Mediterranean)

KNX has been an absolute disaster since DGH showed up. More schlock, less news and ridiculous banter that is more appropriate for Entertainment Tonight. The change in the clock has driven me away for good - and I am in the core of their target demo!

It's absolutely amazing how this station has been destroyed.

If jettisoning a newswheel pattern and scattering traffic reports at random positions on the clock didn't work, why would CBS keep the clown who did that? Doesn't this mean all his other changes were as discombubulating to the audience?

But while we're trashing what used to be a reliable, solid radio source, how can we not address the mess at sister DGH production KFWB?

They are doing the top story THREE times every 20 minute cycle.

"Just give us 22 minutes and we'll give you the same story four times."

Attention Deficit Disorder radio.

For once, I agree with you, Hans.

DGH apparently isn't going to be satisfied until he has driven every listener away that was there before he arrived.

Were I him, I would then be worried if his changes attracted fewer new listeners than the number of listeners he alienated ... at which point CBS will wonder why they hired him.

I believe KNX and KFWB will be his undoing, reputation-wise. (Given that no one on this board ever defends him, I would say that the damage to his rep is already securely in progress.)
______________

As has been proven in the ratings, once does not a trend make. :)
______________

OK, now they're trying to explain it

Things used to be so simple (sigh), you learned the KNX and KFWB new wheels and tuned in when you needed or wanted. Now KNX is trying to do traffic on the 5s, but with a twist - every ten minutes. YOu should hear Dave Williams trying to get his few remaining gray cells around that concept. Can we please possibly go back to traffic on the 1s (KFWB) and traffic every 6 minutes (KNX)?

How much longer will the Dave Hall experiment last? I'm hoping James Cramer will do him in. Message to Dave - we already have talk in LA, we need news, weather, traffic, sports, that's what the news twins are supposed to be for!

I have to agree. I miss my old KNX...when i used to visit, my dial used to fall on KNX on the half hour to hear those awesome newsounder music tones....then get the highlights....

What was the name of the old traffic guy...i know hes gone but you knew where the "lookie loos" were....

the reporters were solid....and the news was topical....and then of course an editiorial from George Nicolaw....like him or not...KNX to me rocked...

and i hate the destruction of the Drama hour...

god I hate the new management

I'm presuming you mean Bill Keene, who was also the weather guy on co-owned KNXT/2 back in the days of "The Big News".
______________

Re: KM double double

According to the R-I technical wizard SamBuca, it is a bug in the database software that does this with posts from certain versions of browser. Since this is a free site and we don't have money to upgrade the software, the bug will remain in force TFN.

Or until gerald switches browsers.
______________

Re: KNX: Traffic on the 5's/How about KAAABC?

I have to agree, he was the wrong hire. But he is a skilled talk
programmer and talent coach. With KABC in the tank, his skills would
be of better use at his old competitor.

Eric Braverman has done next to nothing, yet to seems to fall under the radar. Their morning show is an embarrasment, and without Hannity they would sink even further into an abyss. Back to KNX, I think you have a creative talk programmer
trying to change the mindset of the all news listener, bad idea. I do
like his to of the hour Image ID's, KCBS-AM uses the same image voice
and language on their ID's.

I'm using IE 6.0.2, for whatever that's worth. Don't hate me because I'm beautiful.

... and the Bay Area cognizenti will tell you that the creeping southern californication of All News 740 has started with "image voicing" that is done by some actor from LA instead of Mayor Art.
Edited by zumahans1 on 03/09/06 04:36 AM.
