Hey guys I've often wondered why ABC15 doesn't air a midday newscasts. Obviously this a decision of the station. Have they ever aired a midday newscast? How about when then were FOX15 what did they have in terms of a news dept.? Any history would be great. Just haven't been in the valley long enough to know the history of ABC15.

KNXV built their news department in 1994, and debuted on August 1 of that year, during a time where they were still a FOX affiliate, lost that affiliation (the station called itself "News 15" between August 1994 and January 1995, when they became ABC full-time), then picked up ABC in a group deal. Originally, it was a nightly 30-minute newscast at 9pm (bumped up to 10pm after the ABC announcement), then expanded to 5pm and 6pm as KTVK started to drop ABC News programs in favor of local origination. ABC15 had a midday newscast in the late-'90s, but decided to cut that because there were too many stations doing midday news.

Originally, KNXV's newscasts were very fast-paced and no-nonsense, to match the "FOX attitude." They eventually became more traditional as years went by.

The KNXV-TV Wikipedia article includes some of the station's history. You might find it interesting. I can vouch for the pre-sign-on history, as I did the research on it.

For some reason, I still remember KPHO-TV congratulating them on receiving their CP back in early '75. IIRC, Larry Martel announced it (must have been at noon if he was anchoring).

One thing I don't remember is whether KNXV was a brand new CP, or whether New Television Corp. purchased the remnants of KLUZ-TV, which you said (or more correctly, you quoted Clark Ingram's Dumont site) was briefly on the air in the late '50s. All I remember of it was that it was listed as a CP, along with KGPA-TV 33, in late '60s Vane Jones station guides.

I was able to find an old thread from 2006 where we discussed this: Link: Retro Radio-Info
