KNXV to launch weekend morning show on Jan 19

It's been rumored that ABC15 would have a weekend morning show and the official announcement has been made. Christopher Sign is the host along with Iris Hermosillo on weather. (Not sure if she is also going to act as a co-host for the two hour show.) Beginning January 19th, they will be on from 5am to 7am followed by GMA Weekend and another hour of news from 8am-9am.

(Not sure if this is the final choice for hosts since ABC15 still has a posting for a "Weekend Anchor" and a "Weekend Weather" positions.)

What is the point of having a 5-7AM morning show on Saturday morning?

Are there really enough people up at that hour?

To clarify, the extra 8am to 9am hour airs only on Saturdays.

I, too, wonder what the point is of having a 5am to 7am weekend morning newscast -- although it actually might get decent ratings because it doesn't compete with any of the other stations' weekend morning newscasts.

I expect an announcement any moment that weekend GMAZ will now run from 5am to 10am! ;D

On those Saturdays that I have to work, I'd be watching.

You can watch TV while you work? What kind of job do you have? ???

No, I'd watch at home before I go to work - I have to be at work by 7 AM, even on Saturdays. They don't mind if I have streaming audio or video on my PC, though, as long as the network isn't too heavily taxed (we are VoIP phone systems company, so phone-related traffic has priority).

Overall, it was a solid newscast! Iris and Christopher appeared to have good chemistry and make a good team for weekend mornings. Their exchanges seemed genuine and not forced. The newscast itself was "newsy" and relevant, which is a definite plus (rather than endless fitness, car, gardening, cooking, and other fluffy segments that you often find on weekend mornings).

Sorry Formeraa, I did not think it was that great. It seemed to have an awful lot of commercial/promo breaks. A majority of the stories were a rehash of events over the last few days including the cat that could find the ball in the cup.

I also found Iris' voice to be squeaky and irritating over time. If she was just doing a two minute weather segment it would be tolerable. But when she is sitting at the anchor desk and sharing the stories with the other anchor, it wears on you.

I don't know if it is the writers/producers or anchor fault for some of the stories. "A major car maker is announcing a major recall." was one that caught my ear along with Iris showing a look outside from their roof cam (about 6:30am) and calling it a night time view of Phoenix.

Probably will not be on my normal weekend schedule.

I woke up 'late' (6:30 but I don't work on weekends) so only saw a little, plus the 8:00 version.

I'm in the middle, between Former and I.H.T., meaning I thought it was okay.

Both Sign and Hermosilla were energetic without overwhelming. I liked some of the camera angles that were brought over from the late, great Now @ 9. Hermosilla made a lot of small word errors which made her repeat a lot of things she was saying.

Well, iheardthat, I must respectfully disagree with you. You seem to be comparing it to a weekday morning newscast. I'm comparing it to other weekend morning newscasts. A staple of the weekend morning newscasts is repeating stories from the previous week. In fact, I use them to catch up on some of those stories.

Plus, there's not much competition in Phoenix. Let's see:

1. Weekend GMAZ -- Tess is good, but I really don't think Ryan adds much to the show. Brittney's now gone and I guess we'll have to see who replaces her. I changed the channel this morning when Tess "welcomed Josh DeBerge to weekends" (I guess nobody told her that Josh has been doing weekend evenings for several months).

2. 12 News -- Haley/Oralia and Rob remind me of kids trying to do a grownup's newscast.

3. Fox 10 AZ AM Saturday -- Dan and Britt just don't do much for me, although I give them credit for trying; seem to really be trying hard with live reports, etc.

I find any station to be repetitive, if you only watch their newscasts. For example, if I watch 3TV News @9 and 10 on Friday night, I'm going to see a lot of the same stories on Saturday am. Same with the other stations.

@brian4, I overlook the "small" word errors. Frankly, all of the weekend morning anchors have their less than stellar moments -- even the "great" Tess Rafols splits verbs during small talk! As I said in my previous post, Tess managed to welcome Josh DeBerge to "weekends" (umm, Tess, he's been doing weekend evenings for several months). Even Josh was taken aback for a moment and, then, recovered to say "new to weekend mornings, at least".

Scripps (owner of ABC15) recently purchased KGTV 10 NEWS San Diego (ABC) and made all the marketing hype changes to that station (every story starts with 10 News reporter this or 10 News Meteorologist that). KGTV recently started a weekend morning show too but they run 4:30am to 7:00am and then 8-9am both Saturday and Sunday.

Ironically, I actually expect ABC 15 news to improve based on their new news director. Costello came from KING 5 in Seattle, which has had a stellar news reputation since television started.
