KOA heard in Dallas!

Hello Denver.

I love to listen to NewsRadio 850 KOA. I was actually wondering if there is a 1-800 number. All they ever announce is the 303 number, which I obviously can't... well, it would be inconvient to... call. Let me know. thanks!

Oh, and, Go Rockies! haha.

Unfortunately, KOA doesn't want to invest in an 800 number. That always seemed odd to me, too, since the signal reaches roughly 3/4 of the United States at night. I even looked up available toll-free numbers with a service that rents/sells them and found a few that would fit the station nicely (mostly ones ending with 8585 like the local number.)

Yeah, they may reach a large portion of the US, but their TARGET market is still Denver, hence not having a toll free number. 303 and 720 area codes cover a wide area as it is, so it is a local call to the metro...

I'm used to the likes of San Francisco where stations have ONLY local numbers, but there are half a dozen area codes and all but one are considered long distance or local toll calls...

Either way, phone calls are so cheap these days. If you have the likes of a VOIP carrier, unlimited calls for $25/mo. If a call to Denver from Dallas is going to break the bank, I wouldn't be making the call. ;-)

What?!

3/4 of the US? WOW. Please explain how this, you don't need to get too detailed if you dont want to, I don't know much about AM signals.

I'm pretty sure that KOA (at night) can be heard in something like 38 states.
So the fact that Chris says he heard KOA while he was in Dallas does not surprise me at all. I'm just curious to know where KOA can't be heard (at night). I would imagine the New England states probably wouldn't be able to pick up KOA.

KOA's nighttime signal (according to some of the hosts) reaches all or part of 38 states. More stations have signed on in the U.S. since I first heard that claim, though, so KOA might not reach as far anymore.

AM signals -- especially 50,000-watt stations like KOA -- travel much farther at night because they bounce off the ionosphere above the Earth.

Well, certainly the elevation of Colorado helps.

I used to hear KOA in INDIANA, almost every night. I cant get it in St. louis, even though im closer, due to a low power 850 here. I have heard reports of KOA making it to the EAST COAST, near Boston, and New Jersey. IM sure the High elevation of the Mile high City, gives this 50k watt Blow torch the extra incentive to shoot a signal accross the country.
