Who is the PD now, is it still KJ? It was a great performing station a few years ago(Maxine Todd). What has killed its ratings? Hmmmmmm.

Peachy. Just what DFW needs...another CHURBAN
or URBAN, what with Party 93.7, The Beat, K104,
KRNB, and might as well throw in KISS FM because
most of the crap they play has an urban lean.

Yeah we need another CHURBAN like a hole in the
head or another hispanic or religious station.
When are these programming morons ever gonna get
a clue?

The Oasis serves an audience that enjoys smooth
jazz. It's a small but loyal audience. Ah, what
am I saying....To hell with the listener,..let's
make money for the lawyers and consultants. Who
gives a sh*t what the format is!...

Well, apparently the problem is the audience saying "to hell with KOAI" since it's audience has been declining. Smooth jazz has some issues -- audience is, like the oldies format, aging to the point that sizeable parts of it fall outside the advertising-friendly demos, which is why the 25-54 numbers are falling here and elsewhere. KOAI seems to be suffering overrall audience erosion (12+ numbers declining) and aging.

Although I personally don't think 55+ audiences should be abandoned, the reality is advertises like the younger demos. Older audiences tend to be more brand loyal and more sophisticated -- it takes far more ad impressions generally to get a response than it does on a 30 year old. So, if you are launching a product, your ad dollars generally go farther targetting younger adults. Like it or not, fair or not, commercial radio stations whether owned by a mom-and-pop or large corporate chain are not non-commercial charities. Like any other business, they are there to generate revenue. With advertisers so fixated on younger crowds, it's hard to sustain revenue if your audience in that younger crowd is shrinking each year.

As for the format itself, in most places, it has evolved into an uninspired AC/urban AC hybrid mixing old Phil Collins, Keeny G, and Celine Dion songs with James Ingram. (1) It ain't "jazz" and (2) most of it you can here on several other places on the dial. The format was at least unique when it was invented in the mid-80s playing mostly new age and soft jazz that wasn't heard anywhere else.

Dropping the R&B and alienating their core black audience just might have had something to do with it.

So if this is true, when do it suppose to happen?

Too bad really if its true...KOAI is one of the only decent (music) stations in the market.

The PD for KOAI is Charley Connolly, KJ took over the programming with an addition to the other Infinity stations when Maxine Todd left to program it's Smooth Jazz sister stationKHJZ in Houston. I noticed a few changes in the programming when listening and I heard a few tunes on the station that I was a little surprised to hear. I'll admit the station could use a little fine tuning and I hope Infinity doesn't blow up the station for a Rhythmic CHR, because there's no room for another station not to mention they did the format on 100.3 with Hot/Wild 100 and failed to beat Kiss-FM, and Jack-FM is no better either. I mostly have my radio on The Oasis more than I do the other stations here in DFW and we have 2 Urban AC stations here that suck, but what's else is new.

Man The Oasis would have a 10 share if they just ran that "Musical Star-streams" show all week long:)
______________

In discussing format changes and the lack of good music stations in the market, as many of your regularly suggest, I'm wondering if any of ya'll would agree that the state of music in general is just tired these days? I'm a wedding deejay on the side and I know that 95% of the songs I play at a typical wedding are over 10 years old. Many of the contemporary songs are offensive to most people except giggly 12 year olds. One person wrote above that there were already too many Hispanic and religious stations. Could it be that the other formats just aren't providing any kind of music that most people want to hear? Seems like many on this site would like to see a return to a KZEW type of station. That format has had its day and is washed out and it's time for something new rather than a regurgitation of the same old crap. Top 40 is tired and desperate, country is well past its heyday and apparently no one wants to hear Jazz. And stations like Jack are just playing a mixture of music that everyone is tired of. I say this not in an overly negative sense, but just in a way to see if any of you have comments. What is new around the horizon for music stations? I've abandoned FM radio for AM because of the above reasons. Talk holds my interest much better.

Several good points. The overall product music and programming wise is "assembly line" crap. No one is willing to take a chance unless they get permission from non programming accountants who sit on baords. RADIO is fast becoming more Muzak .

I sense a bit of bitterness, Mr. 'Foreal.' Not sure which nerve I hit but apparently a soft spot was struck in your tender self. You can't say country music is as popular as back in the 'Garth Brooks' era and Top 40 is 'desperate' in the sense of catering to songs mostly about sex and trying to cater to the lowest common denominator, which I suspect you may be a card carrying member from the tone of your response. And if you re-read my original submission, you'll see that it isn't about the 'trends' as in number of people listening, it's about the quality of the product. McDonalds sells more hamburgers than Three Forks does steaks but that doesn't make it a better meal. Get beyond the numbers if you're able.

I think the whole american "mainstream" music scene is tired, as it was in the early 70's. I mainly listen to BBC Radio 1 and sirius, where I find a refreshing mix of music and personality.

Nope...I just get angry when uninformed mobile dj's pull a multi-format Nostradamus. You don't even own a pointy hat...do ya?

Yeah...such is the internet...god bless it.
______________

Foreal, sorry if I offended you or stepeed over the line with my analysis of the market situation. It's just my own interpretation of what's going on with the current music situation. Didn't mean to begin a quarrel. By the way, I do work in the radio industry in addition to being a mobile deejay. It's just a source of extra income. RX
