KO'd by OK

According to Arbitron, Buffalo has slipped to Market #53. Rochester is still market #54.

Oklahoma City, OK jumped from #53 to #48 with a population increase of over 100,000 people.

Who knew that so many people want to go to Oklahoma City. Must be the fact that they've got a Bass Pro Shop...

Maybe this is one reason that Entercom didn't purchase the CBS stations in Buffalo. I'm not putting down Buffalo, in fact I was born there. But let's face it, Buffalo has suffered from population erosion for many years now.

Well, they can't. They already have a full compliment of stations in Buffalo.

Come on...this is NEWS to you guys?

We're in the crapper city/county/state-wise and market size is but one of MANY indicators of WNY growing insignificance.

What city in New York state hasn't suffered population erosion? It could be that Entercom didn't buy CBS' Buffalo stable because they're at their limit with 4 AM's and 3 FM's, albeit 1 bad AM signal (WWWS) and 1 bad FM (WLKK) signal, both of which could be ditched to make room for better signals.

The fact that Entercom didn't expand in Buffalo may be that Entercom believes very strongly in its AM properties and wants to protect them. WGR is coming off the book of its life, thanks largely to the Sabres' playoff run. WBEN did quite well too, 25-54... although you would swoon if you saw the 55+ numbers.

BTW, Let's not get too carried away with Rochester. Yes, it's a nice city with good folks, yet, despite what Wease and a few other Chamber Of Commerce types might think, Rochester (from this end of the thruway) sometimes seems to have a severe case of Buffalo-envy, i.e., Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres. And I wouldn't want to spend too much time after sunset in the crescent.

Rochester radio is about on par with Buffalo, some days good, some days not so good. As a TV market, Rochester is brutal. But  that's another story for another board. All in all, we're in the same boat, whether it's Roch, 'Cuse or Buffalo... getting screwed by the state yet trying to row in the same direction, usually against the current. let's see if Spitzer has the nads to buck the status quo that will help him win the governor's office.

I'm a proponent of regionalism and eliminating waste. A high speed train could get people from Buf to Roch (and vice versa) in 38 minutes, non stop; 43 minutes with a stop in Batavia. Imagine combining the virtues of Buf and Roch. (Yeah, land values and home prices in Akron, Pembroke and Batavia would soar.)

The price of oil is eventually going to mandate a change in our driving and travel habits and trains make perfect sense for commuting and commuters. Whether it's Buf or Roch, look around and see how many single-occupant cars are on the road an AM and PM drive.

(((If America had half a brain, it would have begun producing alternate fuel in the 70's, the first time the oil cartel put a gun to our collective head. We've got the War On Drugs, the War On Poverty, the War On Terrorism, what about the War On Big Oil? And now it appears Detroit is going to die a slow, painful SUV death... but has anybody gotten the message?)))

Then again, Buffalo has a friggin' light rail to nowhere... unless you want to get to the Arena from UB South campus. And the layers of duplicate government in WNY are just ridiculous, absolutely sinful.

Sorry this turned into a transportation and oil rant. Talk about getting "off topic." I need my own talk show. Everybody should have a 15 minute talk show, further proving Marshall McCluhan correct.

The local public transit issue in respect to Buffalo/Rochester is something I'd like to chat about.
The info I would need a better understanding of, is who funds it now?
Is it anything like the problem Toronto has, where Toronto transit wants to be its own system,(as it is now) but Ontario wants to take it over and merge it into one GTA system with exsisting GO (Gov't Of Ontario) transit?

Unfortunantly, this also has nothing to do with radio...
