KOIT Ups Lead In Dec/Jan/Feb 'Trend

So perhaps it wasn't all the fans of Christmas music that drove KOIT's numbers up in the November through January Arbitrends? The December through February numbers give KOIT an even bigger lead over KGO, up +0.7 from +.0.2...

Do you factor in KOIT-1260 in the Aritrend/ Arbitron Ratings?

I know that Arbitron combines the ratings of stations that simulcast the same programming in the same market. When Bonneville finally sells 1260 and it ends is simulcast, I doubt that much will be shaved from the ratings as I guess most people don't listen to 1260?

I'll repeat what I said when KOIT first topped KGO in the last trend. I think KOIT has gained listeners who have nowhere to go for Oldies/Classic Hits. Think about it - the majority of songs KFRC played - both 60s Oldies, and later 70s-80s classic hits, were more or less on the "light rock" side. Over the last few years, "light" has gotten more mainstream with more upbeat hits, and fewer soft romantic ballads and Celine Dion type glop. (KOIT has even played Springsteen lately). With KFRC gone, people have nowhere to go but KOIT, Kiss-FM and KBLX, and those last two only play "old school" (classic soul). KFOG, and of course, the Bone play a lot of classic rock, but their sound is too hard-rock for a lot of listeners. KOIT's also shares a lot of new music with Alice and Star.

With the addition of more and more talk stations (now KTRB), it seems obvious that KGO will continue to trend down, while KOIT gets even bigger,

Last time I asked Bonneville (May 06) they said that KOIT-AM amounted to only a 0.1. People listen to the AM side while passing down the dial. If they want that format they will find 96.5. I do not believe that the loss of KOIT-AM will make any difference in their ratings.

My question is now that KOIT-FM is programed by Entercom, will they allow Bobby Ocean to open up and pick up the sleepy tempo?

I have tunned in 102.9 KBLX a lot lately and there is lots of Tower of Power, John Ledgened, well established air personalities and lots of events the station is involved in. They always at lunch somewhere on Saturday and it sounds like good food in the background. You may even hear a traffic report from yours truly.

Same answer as the other questions about KOIT changing anything. I doubt it. Why mess with success? So unfortunately, the automaton liner-card reading and goopy formatics will stay. Actually - I've noticed that the drive time jocks always get a little more time to talk - so Bobby already has the chance to open up a little if he's subbing in morning or afternoon.

Would I be beating a dead horse if I noted that the ratings for KFRC are not MOViN up at all?

I thought so...

"Llew, I think that horsey is ... dead!"

OK...let's take inventory now - We used to make fun of Max-FM, but their ratings were never as bad as MOViN. As Mr. "106.9 KIFR" points out - Free-FM is even more pathetic, and 1550 AM hasn't shown up in the ratings since the Young Country days. CBS always claims that they're happy with the ratings of Alice and Live because they're Arbitron Top 5 rated for one-legged midgets, or whatever lame rationale they come up with. But they can't REALLY be happy about any of their Bay Area stations except KCBS. I don't know about other markets, but Dan Mason can make himself a hero in this market by leaving KCBS alone, and doing practically ANYTHING else with at least 2 of the others.

I recall that Dave Eduardo predicted about a month ago that 99.7 would flip to a Spanish language format before too much longer.

Why doesn't Dan Mason and CBS just flip all of their stations in the bay area to spanish language and just be done with it? It's the wave of the future! Don't ya know?
