KOKC adds Sports show in Drive Time

Starting Monday, KOKC will start a new show called "Total Access Sports Talk" from 4-7pm weeknights. It will be hosted by Dave Lanning, James Hale & Jimbo Elred. Savage will move into the 9pm-12am slot, and all 3 hours of Boortz will now air 1-4pm.

At this point in time, a Spanish sports-talker would make more sense. We only have 5 sports/talk formats on 6 different stations. Perhaps KZUE, or KTLR could become an affiliate of ESPN Deportes.

Tony's a day late and a dollar short, as usual. One thing positive I can say about it is at least it's something LIVE on 1520 opposed to being sent in via the bird. I, like you, question how many sports programs this city can take. 930 absolutely missed the boat by NOT doing a spanish sports and news combo, maybe even with some older mariachi stuff thrown in. Simulcasting the FM wasn't smart as the ratings proved. They'll do what they intended to do with 930 at this point which is to prevent 1520 from having ESPN now while being able to combo sell it with the Animal. There's still an opportunity though to do the spanish version though for someone IMHO. With where that 1520 signal goes at night, one would think it's sitting on a great place to do that format.

On a personal note, I'm glad to see more of Neal Boortz. His funny but cynical humor on his show just cracks me up. He's considerably better listening than the rest of the ultra-right preachers of the GOP faith that thump on that frequency daily otherwise. Savage being later in the day would be pretty smart really. He was wayyyyyy too over-the-top for afternoon drive anyway.

Now if they would just act like grown ups and start streaming like everyone else, they might have a chance at building a respectable following.

With techno-wiz Dave Lanning on board, they ought to have that in the pipe already.

(And no, I am not digging on Dave, he is awesome with the technical stuff, that's why I call him Techno-Wiz. This guy could put a few engineers to shame, and he's got a great voice. Needless to say, I'm a fan professionally and personally.)

From what I understand TRN is the real hold-up on streaming 1520. Renda is pretty cheap, but TRN insists they are the only ones to stream from what I've heard.

Its actually pretty damned amazing how oversatured the OKC and Tulsa Market have become with sportstalk. What do you have if you include the Ref now... 4 full time sports signals and now this show? Pretty amazing. Tulsa has 4 signals with sportstalk as well.

I think they have some fairly talent people in there that are pretty level in comparison to LS's bunch at the same time slot. I just don't think a part-time sports show is going to make much of an impact in the grand scheme of things on a right-winger political-talk station. Regardless if it's the flagship for OU or not, most of the few people that currently tune to 1520 want to hear someone preaching to them about how bad the "liberals" are, etc. Sports in afternoon drive seems pretty out of place. Unfortunatly it's likely to be lost in the mix of the rest of the stations programming with little new exposure because those that seek out sports programming will only be tuning to 1520 when OU games are on, then right back to LS. Let's face it. Renda slept and let another one pass them while he snoozed. Throwing one show at that problem AFTER the fact proves very little. The real question of the week is can they even sell the show to advertisers somehow and come out ahead of costs more so than just ruhning the Savage feed from TRN. This will be the real proof of the pudd'in.

5 stations on 6 sticks (WWLS-A and F) are listenable in the OKC market. It's amazing ANY can survive with that type of saturation. Why is it that we must play follow the leader in this market, especially on the AM band? Didn't we try this with news-talk with miserable results? "Just like KTOK USED to be.." uhhhh no sir... Not even close.

One has to wonder if, after we all get though playing little chase games if the remaining stations doing sports here will be WWLS-A and F and 1400. I predict in three years that's what we'll have here again.

Don't forget KTOK's "V PM" is hosted by a sports guy who ends up talking sports usually once a day. It was amazing to flip through 5 AM stations and every single one was talking about the Michael Vick/dog fighting story.

The real question of the week is can they even sell the show to advertisers somehow and come out ahead of costs more so than just ruhning the Savage feed from TRN.

And perhaps whoever those old people griping at us about Jesus and how we're all going to hell could be replaced overnight with Phil Hendrie, after all, he is now a TRN property. The show is something of a shell of it's former self (as it existed on Premiere) but all in all it's a lot better than most of their other trite crap.

L&T have been a disaster recently...

I would have to agree that they will be back to 3 signals carrying sports soon... UNLESS someone ANYONE can start to chip away at the huge numbers of some of the Animal shows. I just don't see it happening right now though.

Thank the god of your choosing that J Rod has a better sense of what people like than that other guy did...

As far as L&T go, most of the people I talk to who actually listen to them ain't that damned bright to begin with, so I guess everyone needs his own cup of tea no matter how trite and how much it tries to be other people.

Jrod is a good guy and perfect for that station. As for the last PD I don't have very many nice things to say about him and I know he does'nt about me. I have said it in the past and I will say it again Jrod has a lot of work infront of him on that station and as of lately he has already done alot. I give him a year and he will have brought it up more. As for L&T are concerned I don't think they have much of a future left on KHBZ-FM They never really were anything long term on that station anyway. It will be telling to see this fall.

It's going to take a lot of work and time to ever undo what The Idiot did to KHBZ. What amazes me is they let The Idiot travel up the pike and do it all over again. CC.. WTF? Is it any wonder the ratings up there are taking a BEATing? Jett had the right idea. Get way from that fool before his negative effects start taking effect. :

It's irronic we're talking about The Idiot of KHBZ here considering the previous programming idiot of (KOMA)KOKC could have been his dad. The similarities are soooo strikingly similar. Both are what's wrong with todays radio for damn sure. Why does management let tools like both of these idiots wreck stuff so much before anything is done about it? Why leave a mulit-million dollar investment to people that are so clueless? For those that don't know, it's because of the previous idiot of KOKC that they didn't do this show the FIRST time Dave Lanning was there. Imagine if they would have done it back then.... before the rush.
