KOKE-FM Opinions?

The new KOKE-FM is getting close to 6 months on the air now and I'm curious to hear what you all think about it. The signal has improved significantly, though it will never match that of the legacy blowtorch signals in Austin. Does that matter? What are your other opinions of the station? Is KOKE-FM tilting at windmills?

I would listen to KOKE a lot more often if it was a full power house station. I listened to it on the way back from Taylor on Tune in app on my phone, I enjoy listening to them. I do take every chance I can get at picking them up in the morning on the way to work.

I agree with Jras - I listen every chance I get, but I'm live on the NW fringe so my ability to pick it up is sporadic at best,so it's when I have business in town and traveling into either Round Rock or Georgetown I can hit the button and listen. It's not for everyone, to me it's a gourmet burger in a town that has become filled with bland big macs, so the mainstream listener may not quite appreciate it, but I'm sure there's a large segment of the population that does.

Are we talking technical or content here? If it's technical, well, it is what it is. I'm sure Bob Cole & Co. would rather be on a 100,000 watt stick, but they've done everything they can with what they've got and while it may not reach from Waco to San Antonio, it is nice and clean. On the content side, well, I'd certainly rather they be here than not. It's filled a hole in the market that CC abandoned long ago. I just hope they can bill enough to keep folks checks coming.

Arboretum and Burnet Rd area KOKE's signal is listenable on my Panasonic Walkman. Country Alternative aka Progressive Country is not my cup of tea though.

Let me say that I'm not a country music guy. So, to me there seems to be a strategy of unfamiliarity for it's own sake in KOKE-FM's programming. I don't hear any entry points for those of us who aren't aficionados of progressive country and Americana. Maybe a country listener finds some familiarity...I don't know. It's not that the music isn't good; it's excellent. But I'd think some compatible hits now and then would give more new cumers a reason to stick around. Am I right about this, or is it just my ignorance of the country genres?

The only one in my household that liked Country music was my paternal grandmother. My paternal grandfather was into Sinatra, Big Bands, Bing Crosby, and his favorite stations were KQUE and KBME during it's "Unforgettable" days.

My brother will listen to 99.5 KISS, and 98.5 The Beat in San Antonio, and the other classic rockers KZEP and KTKX. My Mom and Pop listen to XM in the car, 60's on 6 and 50's on 5.

The station's format on KOKE is like wine, an acquired taste the same goes for Classical.

The way Cole explained it to me, this is a 21st century version of KOKE-FM. It honors the progressive country of the original KOKE-FM but features current artists who are performing music in the same vein bucking the current major label trends. If you're not into country at all you probably won't find much to like... except the morning talk show. But if you're into country, there is much music to like on its own merits.

There is a bit of Americana and Southern Rock mixed in there too. The biggest night of the recent Live Music Series featured James McMurtry, Dale Watson and Bob Schneider. Pretty eclectic mix.

I was over in Georgetown today and finally had a chance to listen for an extended period of time, found it playing a nice variety of music. Only had one urge to hit the button (not a big lyle lovett fan), but restrained myself. ;) Nice playlist

I was at 29 and I35 and in downtown Georgetown and it was strong and clear. It fades significantly between Seward Junction and Georgetown on 29 so when I'm headed East, I always try it right after I pass Ronald Reagan Blvd and start listening there.
