KOKO audio problems

KOKO-AM or KOKO-FM? Are you talking about their over-the-air audio or streaming audio?
KOKO-FM 94.3 Kerman/Fresno Dead-air on 94.3
Or was it KOKO-LPFM, Hana HI? Just bustin' balls.
KJFX was out for many hours in the morning on July 3rd.
From Visalia today and yesterday, with KJFX very much on, I got KLOS strong, thought it might be a new LPFM till I heard the calls.
How is it possible for you to hear KLOS in Fresno. That's some SERIOUS miles. Anyone heard the ID?

I also have heard KLOS in Clovis/Fresno when KJFX is off the air and I heard the station ID, KLOS is a Grandfathered signal with a lot of power at a high TL (Mt. Wilson).

I did get the id's in Visalia. I would not think it possible in Fresno but I would not doubt them guys, with the directional outdoor antennas. Was that just one or both of you? With the fancy set up and all.

Well, not really any fancy setup here in S/E Fresno. I can't even get up on my roof for any kind of antenna install
I've said it a million Xs; this is the WORST place I've ever lived for AM and FM DXing. I have a tile roof- I won't go up there But, mainly, signal overload from close by high powered transmitters, both AM and FM, and a ton of nasty electrical noise. I do however, have an EXcellent little FM tuner, the Sony HDFX1. When they were new, about 5-6 yrs ago they listed for $100 and there was a $50 rebate coupon A new DSP design that gave it EXCEPTIONAL sensitivity and selectivity. It's FM performance CAN handle high, close-by signal levels without bleed over to adjacent channels. Performance that was only equaled in the past by $1000 megabuck tuners. However, for some reason Sony discontinued them. I don't know if they sell anything comparable now as a replacement. I do know that this discontinued model regularly sells for $300 plus. They are sought after for FM translator installations that need the great selectivity to pull out the parent station when high power adjacents make for a difficult situation. What it can do with a GOOD antenna, I can only imagine- since I don't have a good, high antenna. I've been DXing off and on for 50 years- lived in some great locations for DXing but had just so-so receivers, now Ive got a holy grail receiver, but crappy location oh well lol

I have 3 outdoor antennas on the same pole on the side of my house and a Directional FM antenna on the side of the garage, which is separated from the house, The top antenna is a u/v/fm directional antenna about 25 feet high that points towards Bakersfield, which would be the same as KLOS, I use it for pulling in KIOO 99.7 KDNO 98.5, and other FMs, and TV, KERO 23.1, KBAK 29.1 and KBFX 58.1, and sometimes 45.1 and 17.1 comes in.
The next antenna is a UHF 4 bay Antenna pointed towards Meadow Lakes and the third is a multi directional (Cross Bar) FM antenna.
I did have a working Rotor at one time but I can turn it manually from the ground, but only so much.
The Garage antenna is a directional FM about 15 ft. high and same way with the other ant can turn it by hand.
Both Stereos are Yamahas and have a coaxial cable connection.
I also heard KLOS in my car driving around Clovis during another time KJFX was off, I Have a Pioneer super tuner 3.
With the dial so congested now it's hard to do any good DXing here, one good one that comes in on Tropo conditions is KTHU 100.7 in Corning CA ,about 260 miles away.

You get those regularly? I think it's time for another antenna, mine is at least that high, I just need to point that way. Would be cool to get kioo too. Stream it all the time, so much better than kjfx.

Yes, KBAK and KBFX come in 90% of the time and KERO is less probably because they are VHF, in the digital world UHF is better, not like the analog days, one of the reason for pulling them stations from Clovis is to get different NFL games, for example 29 will carry the Chargers while 47 has Denver for the morning game, then both will have the Raiders in the Afternoon, etc etc etc.
Yes, I like KIOO over 95.7 the Fox also, they have a bigger music library.

I was still working at Radio Shack in Bakersfield at the time of the digital conversion. The whole town had a hard time getting KERO.

I always wondered that too. At first I thought I had to go out and buy a VHF antenna, but I learned that my UHF antenna works just fine.

Never made sense to me either, The Valley being UHF only for the last 54 years, originally 30 was ch.12 and KERO was CH. 10 up to 1961.
KAIL or KERO? All of my indoors worked fine for KERO but I lived on the east side right up by the hills where the transmitters are. Here in southeast Fresno I couldn't get KAIL until I put up my VHF/UHF outdoor.
Brett, I also lived right up close to the foothills, citrus country East of Orange Cove. And I am now in Southeast Fresno- Sunnyside area. Used to get get some great UHF TV thermal ducting way back when. I'm in Granville subdivision just east of Clovis Av at California.

I have question about On-Frequency repeaters like 94.3 LP at the old KEAP tower near 180 and Valentine? I notice it helps in some areas of town where buildings and freeways block the main signal, but certain areas driving I notice a distorted but clear signal. Normally an on-channel repeater would be used in mountain areas. So is the distortion coming from getting both signals at the same time?

Yes it is. Usually called "mutual interference" - it sounds like multipath. You can sometimes control the antenna pattern on the booster to put the interference zone over a largely-unpopulated area, but there is always going to be somewhere that suffers from the overlap of the two signals.
