KOLA v. KTYD Signal

I do not know if it is me, but I have noticed lately the quality of KOLA's signal has deteriorated and KTYD from Santa Barbara seems to override the signal in many areas of Southern California.

Here was the strangest thing, one of those areas where KTYD was heard loud and clear was none other than Ontario, KOLA's coverage area. If memory serves correct KOLA's Box Spring transmitter is in direct line-of-sight to Ontario.

For a good five minutes KTYD overpowered KOLA as I was driving along the 10 through Ontario.

Again, lately in the LA/OC area KOLA and KTYD bounces back and forth with KTYD winning the battle many times over.

Of course there are several spots in the basin KTYD has always overpowered KOLA, but as many recall KOLA has (had) one of the better Inland Empire radio signals into the LA/OC area. In fact KOLA's signal, at the height of its strength, does (did) battle with KTYD's signal in Ventura County and in fact in some Ventura County cities KOLA comes in like a local signal.

So I am wondering, did KOLA lower their power, or is somebody there not paying attention to the signal output, or did KTYD increase power and/or change transmitter locations?

August + Hot days + Pacific Coast = Inversion layers.

I had the opportunity to spend several work days listening to KTYD a couple of weeks ago.

Much better than the formulaic stuff I get at home.

I was impressed.

Well, KTYD is back to being locally owned. If memory serves correct KTYD was once owned, for a time, by Clear Channel, but a few years ago CC sold their Santa Barbara properties to an organization called Santa Barbara Community Radio... or something to that effect.

As for the signal issue, I figured it was weather conditions this time of year causing KTYD to override KOLA in several areas, however I don't ever remember KTYD's signal coming in so strong this time of year. Furthermore I don't ever remember KTYD overriding KOLA's signal in the Inland Empire as it did earlier this week.

Santa Barbara has always been bit of an interesting radio market as many stations there really tune their sound and image to the culture of Santa Barbara.

I have wondered, though not that it matters for advertising rate reasons, does KRTH ever show up in the Santa Barbara ratings? In my many, many travels to Santa Barbara I've noticed plenty businesses, restaurants, and even friend's homes there often have KRTH on; it seems to be a fairly popular station in Santa Barbara (not to mention it's really the only L.A. FM that can be picked up with ease in that area).

Several L.A. signals along with some from San Diego appear in the Santa Barbara ratings. The market is surveyed twice yearly (Spring & Fall).

Since the Spring 2010 rankings havent been posted yet to the radio-info.com Santa Barbara, CA ratings grid yet
(http://www.radio-info.com/site/markets/grid/santa-barbara), here's a link to the ratings with Spring 2010 included:
