KOLA vs K-EARTH who do you like better?

KOLA has a great playlist that, at least to my eyes, resembles a variety hits playlist moreso than a typical classic hits station.

KRTH certainly has a very good playlist these days, but I think I prefer KOLA by a small margin.

93.1 Jack FM appears to have eliminated almost all non-rock music from its playlist to give KRTH more wiggle room.
I prefer the '70s/'80s/'90s Classic Hits blend over KOLA's unique '80s/'90s/2000s blend as I think '70s music blends in far better with the '80s than 2000s music, but KOLA is certainly great at what they do. Personally, KRTH with KOLA's rotations and playlist size would be my ideal Classic Hits station, as not only would it prevent burnout for the powers, but also give some of the songs KRTH is rotating in the 2-5 spin a week range more of a chance to shine. The selection of '90s songs on KRTH may not be too deep (yet), but it is fairly diverse in terms of genre and I actually really like most of the '90s songs they play. In general, KRTH's song selections are on point and really match my musical tastes, even if some on the board may complain about their rotations and playlist size, but they're at or near the top in LA for a reason, so props to them for that.

KCBS-FM still does play a decent amount of non-rock music. They're definitely a really eclectic station that's probably best Adult Hits station in the country.

The reason I don't listen to K-EARTH is because they still are not playing the songs I like. Yes they might be billing great but they should take a gamble and get rid of the 70's and play 80's 90's and 2000's eventually they will have to move forward in order to remain revelent
Kola plays everything classic rock. Country classic pop and classic alternative. So what does everyone think do you agree with me?
I agree. KRTH has shuffled in and out some 80's tunes over the years, but for the most part, it has remained the same ole, same ole. There are some good 90's music being played, such as New Radicals so there's opportunity there as they'll eventually add more songs. As for the little 70's they play, might as well dump them all. The quantity played doesn't reflect their overall image as playing the greatest hits of the 70's, 80's and 90's. Playing one song by Boston, two songs by Elton John, one Bee Gees disco song, an overplayed Queen "Rhaspody" and select others, doesn't cut it. 15 or 20 greatest hits from that wonderful decade represent little as many of the songs I like too, are missing, just as you mentioned above James.

But as you and I know by now, KRTH programs to their main audiences who have accepted their music, not to you or I. That ended decades ago.

Because it might be fun to compare all three SoCal similarly formatted stations.
I always tune in 103.3 KRUZ when driving from L.A. to the Bay Area on Highway 101. Great mix of 70s-80s classic hits, which is the sweet spot for my musical tastes. And the signal is incredible, listenable from about Calabasas all the way up to Monterey County.

Decades ago I heard it up in Ukiah one morning when there was a strong temperature inversion. And indeed I heard it with a portable radio on deck aboard a cruise ship at least half way down the Baja California peninsula at least half way to Cabo.

Must have been before 1974. KUKI-FM is on 103.3.
Way back in the day when KRUZ was a Beautiful Music format station, they used to promote their big signal frequently with imaging statements such as: "Bridging the gap between the Bay Area and Los Angeles 103.3 Cruise". And "In California there is no other station more powerful than K-R-U-Z".

Indeed, back then there was no station in the Redwood Empire on 103.3

They both suck but K-Earth sucks less. I’m 35 and I don’t want to hear 90s and 2000s on classic hits!
There is a difference between personal taste and overall "suckingness". In the case of K-Earth, the station is among the highest rated in LA and is at the top of its roughly 50-year trajectory.

You don't like it. Okay. That is opinion. But a huge number of people in LA like it and use it regularly.

There are 92 AM and FM stations... not including translators and LPFM stations... in the LA market. KRTH is among the top two or three. That sounds pretty un-suckky to me.

Disagree. It's actually the ideal Oldies station in 2024. The playlist has evolved nicely to newer (and just as good) music.
The station itself is legendary, 52 years on the air is huge, adding to their long list of accomplishments since 1972. As for the music played on that station today and in recent years, a portion of it, is to be left desired. Gorillaz? Lit? The Killers? It may give them nice ratings today, but I don't ever remember hearing that stuff (if they were even hits) on the radio back in the day.

They were. You weren’t listening to CHR at the time.

When I'm visiting LA, I listen to KRTH. I can definitely see how the playlist could be a little stale (to someone who listens every day), but as a whole, the station sounds really good. I'm way outside of the target demo (I'm 28), but KRTH is right in the sweet spot of the kind of music I like. They lean heavily on the 80's. mix in some music from the 70's, and throw in a few select tracks from the 90's as well. It's not "true oldies," but it's what I like.

The approach on KOLA really isn't for me (which is unfortunate, since they do have some good songs in the playlist). Too many of the songs they play are polarizing, and turn me away. I've already debated it on the Los Angeles forum before (so I will keep my opinion concise): once you start pulling out music by Kesha, I lose interest and will listen to something else. If there was literally no other radio station that interested me, I might be more tolerant. However, since KRTH is there (and doesn't play modern pop), I'd rather just stick with them.

All those bands had great tunes back in the day I remember them well. But to hear them on a classic hits station kinda weird. Killers definitely hit the billboard hot 100 at some point.

You're actually just inside the target demo (25-49/25-54).

That's an issue of your perception.

Gorillaz "Feel Good, Inc." peaked at #14 and is from a double platinum album. It's 19 years old.

Lit's "My Own Worst Enemy" peaked at #16, is from a platinum album and was a KROQ staple. It's 25 years old.

The Killers' "Mr. Brightside" peaked at #10, is an RIAA certified Diamond single (10x Platinum), is from a triple-platinum album and is 21 years old.

Time, shockingly, has not stood still.
