Is it just me or is it that Kola is now starting to sound alot like Kearth. Basically the same song selection with a few differences here and there. Kola used to play alot more variety of oldies and now seems to be caught up in playing the sames songs alot. Does Kola now have the same Program Director as Kearth???

KOLA is under different ownership than KRTH. I listened to both this weekend, and KOLA is definitely moveing more into 70's, while KRTH plays a more limited late 60's sound. I don't find them at all alike, but I guess it a matter of taste... KOLA always plays a lot of songs I ask myself, "was that really a hit" about.

As someone who is Bi-coastal..

Do you have any thoughts on how L.A.'s Bob Hamilton does such a fine Job with Majic 102.7. He has great Talent, but somehow keeps things fresh!

"As someone who is Bi-coastal"

If someone lives at both the north and south poles, are they bi-polar?

Have no clue on Majic. Suspect it is the fact that Bob is a fine Oldies PD...

I listen to both Kola 99.9 & K-Earth 101. I don't have a background in radio, so I don't know all of the terminology and politics of the business. It seems to me that KOLA tends to play happy, good time music. They also play songs that were only minor hits back in their day. I like that. It brings back a lot of good memories. KOLA started playing 70's songs months before K-Earth did. And K-Earth recently had a "random play weekend", something that KOLA has been doing for months. So, you might say that K-Earth is sounding more like KOLA as of late? K-Earth plays more Motown, perhaps because of L.A.'s demographics. I jump between the two stations, which gives me a pretty good mix of songs.

Wasn't Bob Hamilton with K-earth for a while? I believe he replaced Mike Phillips about several years ago at K-Earth.
Bob Hamilton was the KRTH Program Director in the early to mid 80's. Mike Phillips was replaced by Jay Coffey when he retired in 2001.Coffey was then replaced by Jhani Kaye at the beginning of this year...

I have noticed the same thing. It is the attempt by both to incorporate more 70s music and to change their demo to a younger one. Afterall, as weird as it is to contemplate, the 1970s are now THIRTY YEARS AGO! It is inevitable that a station has to change as time moves on and its demo becomes younger. Not too many stations could cut it today with 1930s music, wouldnt you agree? The problem with 70s to 80s music is the emergence of many different music genre. The era of the oldies station may face extinction in the next 10 years. KDES 104.7 out of Palm Springs seems to be more resistant to this change than either KRTH or KOLA. Bill Lussenheide

Have you ever checked the average age of the non-Hispanic population of the Coachella valley? There is a standards / EZ station that is #2 or #3 in billings, too. It's an enormously wealthy market, with practiacally no national business, so the local retailers know who has the money and it is the retirees and the weekenders and the seasonal residents. Between Indian Wells, La Quinta and Rancho Mirage, you have 3 of the 10 wealthiest towns in CA.

I reference to that oldies station in Palm Srpings that appears to be holding it's own, I would guess that lot of the So Cal baby boomers might be moving out there. That would help explain the affluence and the fact that an oldies station is still doing well in that area.

Kola 99 and K-Earth 101 both had their annual "Memorial Day Top 400/500" weekend recently. If you go to each website, you can see how people voted and how the songs are numbered. "Hotel California" was #1 ? at KOLA 99 ? It's a pretty good song. But... #1 ??And look at the "top 50" songs from each station. You can see a pretty obvious ethnic profile in regards to the flavor of the songs as a whole. As I've mentioned before, I don't have a background in radio. But, even I can see that KOLA 99 and K-Earth 101 are playing to different audiences. I'm not real sure why I brought this up. But, it does make you wonder if and why these stations would be copying each other's style. They may be copying eachother's ideas. But, they aren't copying playlists.
