KOLA's trend lowest in years

Their lowest in over 6 years at least, KOLA is wayyyyy down... They used to almost always land in the Top 3 or 4 since 1998. Since they tweaked their titles from 50s-mostly 60s and some 70s, now that they're playing late 60s and 70s seems that they lost more listeners. Opinions?

what I do not like is that they play a lot of 60's stuff that is very secondeary and which, personally, I dislke hearing as it is not memorable. I think the 70's stuff is better picked than the 60's ones they were doing.

The issue is much deeper. KOLA (and KFRG) are victims to a changing demographic. They are targeted to an older (primarily non-ethnic) audience. KOLA and KFRG have seen their 25-54 numbers plummet over the years.

The demographics of the I.E. are showing tremendous growth in the younger cells - and they are heavily ethnic - which is why KGGI and KWIE consistently rank 1-2 in the 18-34 cell - and also are two of the top three local stations in the market consistently (excluding KLYY which programs to L.A.).

The I.E. - not unlike L.A. - is young ethnic and older non-ethnic - which is why KZLA is what it is - and will continue to be.

KFRG, which was No. 1 25-54 in the I.E. for years on end - was eighth in the trend this morning behind KLYY, KGGI, KLVE, KFI, Jack, KSCA, and KXRS/KXSB. What does that tell you (and for the record, KOLA ranks 11th).

You make some very valid points. I wonder if KOLA needs
to move to a more Art Laboe style music approach?

I think that would be going in the wrong direction, as Laboe has always focused on the "oldies but goodies" which primarily appeal to the older demographics that KOLA needs to lose focus toward.

There is nothing wrong with playing the right 60s titles within an otherwise 70s-focused playlist, but KOLA has made some odd choices. (I should have made a list of the titles I found out-of-place the last time they came in here; I cannot receive KOLA consistently.)
______________

I bet anything with Buddy Holly or Petula Clark would probably be a bad sign?

The younger Hispanics were not in the USA when those songs were popular.

Very few Oldie programmers have cracked the code in correctly
mixing 60's and 70's hits. Its not just changing demographics, its
horrible, stale positioning and marketing of the format. The 70's
has been co-opted by nearly every library based music format.
Sean Ross of Edison Research is just a brilliant mind. He has often
chided oldie stations for their lack of finesse in presentation
and execution of the format.

Re: KOLA playlist

OK my own personal tastes are quite different for what passes as "Classic Hits of the 60s and 70s" which more accurately should be called "That 70's Station with a sprinkling of 60's Nuggetts"---
Most of the songs I liked Back in the Day,

songs that I still like:

Brandy – Looking Glass – 1972*
Proud Mary – CCR – 1969
You Are the Sunshine of My Life – Stevie Wonder – 1973*
What’s Going On- Marvin Gaye – 1970
Lean On Me – Bill Withers – 1972* [played the LP version]
Spirit In The Sky – Norman Greenbaum – 1970 (peaked at #3)
Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me – Elton John – 1974
It’s the Same Old Song – Four Tops – 1965 (peaked at #5)

Songs I don't ever need to hear again the rest of my life:

Rich Girl – Hall & Oats – 1977*
Too Late to Turn Back Now – Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose – 1972
You’re So Vain – Carly Simon – 1973*
Old Time Rock & Roll- Bob Seger – 1979
Your Mama Don’t Dance – Loggins & Messina – 1972-73
Operator - Jim Croce – 1972 (peaked at #17)
Some Kind of Wonderful – Grand Funk – 1975 (peaked at #3)
Come and Get Your Love – Redbone – 1974 (peaked at #5)
Rock On – David Essex – 1974 (peaked at #5)
Jive Talkin’ – BeeGees – 1975*
Sundown – Gordon Lightfoot – 1974*

Songs I'm kind of neutral about:

Love Train – The O’Jays – 1973*
Fly Like an Eagle – Steve Miller Band – 1977
One of These Nights – The Eagles – 1975*
Honky Tonk Women – Rolling Stones – 1969*
Magic Carpet Ride – Steppenwolf – 1968 (peaked at #3)
Show Me the Way – Peter Frampton – 1976
Brother Louie – Stories – 1973*

I don't know maybe some Motown was burned to a crisp, but HEY no Supremes, Martha & the Vandellas, no Temptations (except My Girl), etc etc
AND no BEATLES in TWO HOURS???
jeeez now playing Horse With No Name another song I can live without

Re: KOLA playlist

I guess I won't be programming any oldies stations any time soon, cause I think that is a pretty decent list. No large FM frequency station is going to have enough variety for me, but that seems like a pretty good mix to appeal to their target demo.

Any two hour list from any station will have titles that a given person won't like, but I don't see too many moldies on the list.

The obvious comaprison to the heritage oldies station in LA: this list is like a dream come true for those stuck with KRTH for years.

Personal thoughts, not backed up by research

Thanks for posting the playlist.

I obviously don't have access to whatever research KOLA has done, but just from gut instinct, here are the songs I would have had reservations playing:

> Rich Girl – Hall & Oats – 1977*
> Brandy – Looking Glass – 1972*
> Fly Like an Eagle – Steve Miller Band – 1977
> Magic Carpet Ride – Steppenwolf – 1968 (peaked at #3)
> Operator - Jim Croce – 1972 (peaked at #17)
> Some Kind of Wonderful – Grand Funk – 1975 (peaked at #3)

> Rock On – David Essex – 1974 (peaked at #5)
> Jive Talkin’ – BeeGees – 1975*
> Sundown – Gordon Lightfoot – 1974*

OTOH, it may be that these songs are in very low rotations, in which case I might play most of them. (Hall & Oates, Redbone, and David Essex I would still harbor doubts about.)

Big risk playing album versions of songs, though. Oldies stations by their very nature need to play familiar versions, which is usually the single.
______________

Re: Personal thoughts, not backed up by research

If you're not going to play these, there might have been opportunities available to you at KRTH. Ignoring recent changes, they didn't play most of these either.

Brandy, Magic Carpet, and Some Kind of Wonderful did make appearances though.

Re: Personal thoughts, not backed up by research

Oh, I see what you mean.
Sundown? Rich Girl? These songs have NO PLACE in a 60's and 70's format.
Come and Get Your Love, maybe... but the rest of them are way too AC, imho. I think we played a lot of those on that list at KJQY!

I agree with you KM!

KFRG REACTS!

K-Frog is conducting a "Listener Pledge Drive" today... sounds cool.... I guess it started early this morning. I don't know how long they're doing it.. They mentioned how bad the latest ratings were and that they might not be around much longer if they don't get more listeners.

That must sound somewhere between maudlin and pathetic on the air.

All that's going to accomplish is making their existing audience sad and anxious that the station will go away, and gain very few new listeners (who listens to a station that is literally begging them to?).
______________

And it soulds like a bad stunt. KFRG was #1 biller int he market again last year, although there has been no increase for last 7 years... flat. However, they have a 1.3 power ratio, meaning they are getting what revenue there is in this dreadful radio market.

Looks like a 70's Classic Hits format to me. Hardly an Oldies station playlist!

It's a great market with underperforming salespeople. You have 1.7 mil in the metro and growing (not to mention the 1 mil in the no man's land in between L.A. and the 15). You have a young population that spends more retail dollars than overrated Orange County - and yet they aren't converting to revenue.

Radio out there needs to program correctly - and local. KGGI, KWIE, and KCAL do a good job of that. KXRS/KXSB do decent revenue as well.

I think the market underperforms because it isn't consolidated and they are competing on rate - and we know that a lot of agencies just use L.A. and take whatever spill they get.
