Kolchak: The Night Stalker

I've heard this series is going to be remade for the upcoming TV season, but don't know much more than that. Frankly, they're going to have to come up with a hell of a cast to recapture what made the original series so great. I mean, no one could ever believe anything terrible could ever happen to Darren McGavin & they'll need the same kind of bumbling but sarcastic character who could wisecrack in the face of vampires, werewolves, & mummies. Same with Simon Oakland as his screaming editor Tony Vincenzo. The series was supposedly the inspiration for the X Files. If nothing else, even if they modernize it & it loses the whimsy it had, it might prompt a release of all the episodes on DVD instead of the 1 or 2 that are available. I managed to buy the Columbia House VHS set on Ebay with all 20 episodes & the 2 full-length TV movies, but I think Kolchak deserves a DVD release. Does anyone know any details about the new series?

You know, I liked the original series. Some of the special effects were kind of lame, like the headless motorcycle guy.--That was pathetic! But anyway, I liked Darren McGavin and Simon Oakland. I think if that show had been tweaked a little bit here and there it could have been on the air for a few more years that it was. One thing I didn't like about it was the fact that Darren McGavin always wore the same white seersucker suit--and the same silly-looking hat that sat on the back of his head in every episode! He looked silly in that outfit and I really do believe that that was one of the things that doomed that show. He also acted a little too silly and goofy in some of the scenes with the monsters and/or murderers. The way that he would always fall down when being chased or the facial expressions he would sometimes give when he was about to be attacked by a vampire or whatever. But I was a kid when that show first aired, and I liked it. Whenever I catch a rerun of The Night Stalker now on some Sci-Fi channel marathon, it brings back memories of my youth and the way that me and my friends would say to one another: "Hey, did you see the Night Stalker last night?!"

Also, I loved Darren McGavin in the 1983 movie "A Christmas Story"!!!---Now that's a great movie! A true classic! He did a wonderful job in that movie!

Thanks guys. At least the new series doesn't look like it will try to recapture the horror/comedy feel of the original. And another thing: it didn't matter how often Tony Vincenzo got fired & went to a different newspaper. He always ended up with Kolchak on his staff & the screaming began. In fact, Oakland was more threatening than most of the creatures on the show. The pilot Vegas Vampire episode was the highest rated TV movie of all time up to that point.
