KOLE Port Arthur "Stunting"

Well, sort of.....they have a loop running telling listeners they are moving studios and will return with regular programming soon....NOW, someone needs to tell KOLE they should just turn off the xmtr right now......as they ARE NOT legally IDing......all you hear is KOLE 1340......but you never hear "KOLE Port Arthur" at the top of the hour.....guess noone with the new owners thought about MAYBE moving the studios 1st then switching STL paths and the listeners would never know!! But now, they are losing revenue.....and after they paid almost half a mill for it?? DUH!!!

I thought the studios on Sawyer (the old KLVI studios years ago) were the ones where KOLE (and KTFA in years past) was located. Where would they move the studios? Port Arthur? Unbelievable - I was amazed when I listened to it today. For a station that relies on no local programming now - only syndicated crap - they will probably lose 2 of the 3 listeners they currently have.

The 3rd one fell asleep listening to the loop ;D

I thought they were getting the Sawyer studios as well.....(Gawd, I remember the old days at KLVI in the 70s there!! with 94.1 KBPO in the bomb shelter in the back....and FM RF all over the studios...the horiz and vertical FM bays had REAL bad radiation down into the building!) Have no idea where they may be moving but if they can afford to have the loop running, you THINK some ingenious engineer would have had a trailer or portable building set at the tower and a sat dish there for their programming......how much ya wanna bet thats how it will end up?? :)

You don't need studios for satellite delivered programming. Perhaps they will sell the Sawyer studios to KLBT as they are located on Calder next to the muffler shop.

I have some really cool KOLE audio-that is pretty clean form the early 60's. Singing time checks, King KOLE news, and some vintage news promos from NBC and more.

If you want 'em, e-mail me and I'll MP3 'em to ya.

According to the Asset Purchase Agreement filed with the FCC, Sima Birach DID purchase the Sawyer Street studios and all the equipment from Ralph McBride. Why move the studios? Why run an audio loop? What's next for KOLE? Will it go silent? Inquiring minds want to know.

Yeah I would liek them.....(grew up listening to KOLE when it was THE top40 station of the area...the GOOD days of radio)...you can send them to psithurism at earthlink dot net (a secondary address I use).

I heard that Sima, in fact, did not purchase the building that KOLE was in. The business next to it...Metco I believe, bought it from Ralph. So there's no telling what the guy bought the signal for. I have checked out some of this guys stations online and it seems to be ethnic broadcasts, and most of his stations are leased out. Maybe that is his intentions for KOLE. I know the guy that works for Sima for KOLE and he's a nice guy. Doesn't know too much about radio, but he really wasn't hired because of that. He was hired to be kind of the "liason" for Sima. You know, keep it running and calling the right people to fix any technical problems. I do know that the reason that things are happening the way they are happening is because of Birach Broadcastings lack of planning down here. They knew when they had to be out of the old building, but didn't bother to get the move organized until last week. I guess Sima isn't too concerned about losing what little revenue he's getting from KOLE. I bet the guy's got deep pockets. That's why I think he's probably just going to lease the station out or something. I guess I should let my friend know about that legal id thing. thanks for that info.

In the early '60's, across the street from the old K L V I studios on Sawyer Street, is the Eleventh Street Plaza. In the space on the very end of the center, next to Brock Audio, was the old K F D M Radio 560.

After John Hicks bought K D F M Radio, he changed the call letters and built a new building on Sawyer Street, behind the shopping center.

Those old K O L E jingles were pretty good, I think they were PAM Jingles. I also have great copies of all those jingles.

The last time I was in the K O L E studios, they were in the Republic Savings Building on Procter Street , downtown Port Arthur. That was about 1970. The station was up for sale, and I was interested in buying. The Francis Family and I in Dallas couldn't come to terms.

Last time I checked, the stunting is over and KOLE is completely off the air. Doesn't make sense to power the transmitter to tell people you aren't broadcasting anything meaningful.

Yeah, static is better than what they were running!!! (and no legal IDs either...DUH!!! I guess noone at this new owner cares about the rules...if they have cash to blow, prepare to spend some of it paying fines if thats the way they run a radio station :)

Personally I would like to see a local sports station get started up here in the BMT-PA area with local shows like we use to have on 1450AM. But I doubt that format would survive in this area.

Personally, I like KOLE better in its present form than when they were running all the syndicated 'programming'. I'd rather listen to a trained zebra play CDs or an Ipod than the junk they had on previously.

Static is good.

Not enough local sports to keep it.....hence why 1450 dropped ESPN once 97.5 went to them...(funny that 97.5 is 1450's sister FM.....well it WAS when 97.5 was KAYD and 1450 was KAYC in the old days).....

Im beginning to wonder what AM radio will be in the BPT area in the next couple of years....LVI is the only signal that covers the entire area....(1250 would but Radio Maria??? Hell they cant even keep the tower lights on!!! even after building that new 500ft tower, the lights lasted for a few weeks then DARK.......time to call the FAA and complain!)....1300, I am wondering if they will EVER build the new site near Lumberton....and 1150?? WHAT a joke (got new pictures....they went to the FCC and an official complaint.....no lights on the ONE tower that is up....what?? its under 200ft?? HMMM then according to their license, thats a change of radiator height.....so they are illegal no matter what!...besides where's the second tower?? and the STA request to GO dark?? since when were they ON the air?? The STA app said their electric meter was pulled.....REALLY??? WHY is there a meter on site with a seal from LAST YEAR??? and the cutout aka fuse, is closed!! Oh well, too bad for Sylvestor and VL...they are gonna lose an AM and get their hands slapped for LYING to the FCC...others thinking of buying 1150, please take note! ;O)
990?? LOW audio, NO one at the studios, etc etc.........PISS poor coverage for a Class B 1KW at that freq....1600 is still there but at night, the directional kills them in BMT....audio could be better...
1380 is gone, 1340 is off air.....1510 is still daytimer only and a lost cause no matter what (which is why Jimmie Joynt build 93.3 and put KCAW on there back in the 70s)

Yep, AM in the BPT area is really sucking these days...

HMMMM, static!! (drool).......

IF the owners were smart, (and thats taking a BIG leap), they would tear off the downwires and convert the tower back to series fed.....put a trailer next to it and at least get it back on the air (the fence has a couple of BIG dents in it now............wonder if the transmitter is still there!)...

Channel 4 is planning on abandoning their Port Arthur studios and put their engineering at the tower from what I read on the AVS forum.....so much for Port Arthur broadcasting!! (even LP 107.1 is losing their studios at city hall...but they had to say bad things about the city goverment.....and then they say they WILL be building out a Class A noncomm in the 89Mhz range...AHH Hello, there is a big difference between APPLYING and having a CP...there are 6 applications for the freq.......nothing is a sure bet!)

ROFLMAO over all this mess......geesh

I bet the transmitter and other equipment is gone, perhaps for the copper.

As far as KBTV leaving Port Arthur, will they move their 'radar' as well? Maybe to the mall? There's not much there in that part of Port Arthur, and you'd need armed guards to protect your electronic equipment. Long term, I don't see the mall as a viable place for them to be.

Where is the Channel 4 transmitter any way?

Channel 6 and 12 are in Mauriceville, but I'm not sure I ever knew where the 4 transmitter was.

6 is on the same site (but not the same tower) as they have been since the 1950s sign on...just north of I10 and west of the railroad tracks that parallel the old US 90 south of Vidor....It has NEVER been in Mauriceville....12 and 34 (which is closest to the hwys12 and 62 intersection) are there (and 12 originally signed on in Sabine Pass due to Shreveport's 12! They were allowed to move to Mauriceville with a directional antenna) 4, whose tower is the tallest of the four sticks, is east of hwy 12 and north of I10...about 2-3 miles NW of 6's tower...

Speaking of Port Arthur whats the info on 170.1? Are they located in PA? What format are they?
