KOLW 97.5 Tri-Cities stunting

Construction sounds and riddles being heard over the 97.5 airwaves tonight (and some songs) as Hot 97.5 draws to a close this weekend. Format TBA 3/4 6AM. This is per the 'other' radio website that has a word starting with an I and ending with a T. I'm guessing 97.5's ratings weren't too good compared to 99.1.

Word is it will be using "KISS" as the imager. This probably means mainstream top40, just what the market really doesn't need. But if they want to attack 99.1, more "power" to them...

Which is why 97.5 is completely open here in Yakima. KOLW used to come in weakly, but they barely make it in now even on a decent day. Did they lose their original transmitter site or something?

STA REquest:
KOLW(FM) HAS BEEN OPERATING AT 5% OF AUTHORIZED POWER BECAUSE OF PROBLEMS WITH ITS HVAC. NEW REPLACEMENT UNITS ARE ON ORDER. LICENSEE RESPECTFULLY REQUESTS SPECIAL TEMPORARY AUTHORITY TO CONTINUE SUCH OPERATIONS UNTIL THE NECESSARY REPAIRS ARE MADE. LICENSEE WILL PROMPTLY NOTIFY THE COMMISSION WHEN THE STATION IS ABLE TO RESUME OPERATIONS WITHIN LICENSED PARAMETERS.

Thank you! Yes, with 97.5 open it sure has been nice, I'm hoping it will stay that way through at least part of Es season.

EDIT - Yes, they are now 97.5 'Kiss FM,' all the hits as of this morning. Voicetracked, Brooke & Jubal, blah blah blah...nothing local whatsoever besides commercials. At least with Hot they had a couple of LOCAL DJ's, but they were dumped for said Townsquare voicetracking from 2,000 miles away.

IMO, Tri-Cities has way too many FM stations on the air for the population it serves. Multiples of different formats...seriously, 3 CHR's (albeit 107.7 is in Pendleton, it has a grade A signal to Tri-Cities)? Ridiculous number of Spanish stations, EVEN with the population of Hispanics down there. There's what, at least 6? 7? Then there's a couple of Spanish Religious LPFMs to boot. Two classic rock's (we only have one). And yet, besides KUMA-92.1 and the Classic Rock stations, Tri-Cities does not have their own Classic Hits station down there (I think since 97.5 was Kool FM), or Adult Hits (since Bob flipped to yet another Spanish format). I can tell you Yakima does not have the time or capacity to support 3 CHR stations. 107.3 is CHR, 99.7 is Urban/Rhythmic, 106.1 is Hot AC...differences in each format. With all of those translators (and there's even more CPs to shoehorn more...CPs were filed recently for both KONA and KFLD on 98.7), talk about cutting the pie 30 different ways. I do love that Smooth Jazz translator on 102.3, but I cannot hear it here, it's only 38 watts on Badger and still 75 miles away.

Brooke and jubal are based in seattle.. and townsquare does some voicetracking but usually doesn't look to ofar away from it.. how do you know the VT'ers are "2000 miles away"?

brooke and jubal is based in seattle

One's coming from WPST in NJ (Edwin, afternoons) - 2300 miles away. The other midday gal is voicetracked from 97.5 ZOK in Rockford IL, almost 1,600 miles away. Sad! Nothing local!

Ah, well such as it is... we don't know the companies reasoning or why they do certain things.. I can tell you from my experience, townsquare is one of the better corporations in the radio business, if you had to pick the lesser or the evils.

Well, Townsquare has some issues. Like their AM news/talk off the air frequently on weekends. Like the same announcer over and over with station promos. Like Dave Ramsey completely out of synch on weekends. And poor programming after 3pm with Mark Levine, just god-awful.

But the bigger picture is too many contemporary formatted radio stations in the market. My gawd, there must be atleast six signals in the Tri-Cities that offer some sort of contemporary format. Yes, some are softer and older, but with the exception of 97 Rock and The Eagle, the market offers a smorgasbord of contemporary hit music, which isn't exactly great at this point. I like the Oasis out of Walla Walla, but their signal pretty much sucks in the Tri-Cities.

The Tri-Cities definitely has too many contemporary stations. Fighting for a small piece of the revenue pie, IMO.

No Soft AC's, no Classic Hits in Tri at the moment. Such a large audience waiting....
