KOMO electrical noise

Ford, I haven't checked many of those signals with this particular radio. KPLZ 101.5 fm is at 880 on the am side, so I have to pass KJR 950 there, and that sounds normal. I haven't checked 1090 from that radio, but they've had buzzing on other radios where KOMO is fine.

Yeah, if you're anything like me you don't spend much time on the AM band these days. I listen to CKWX, KKXA and KGY, but thats it.

Yeah, my presets on AM are KOMO, KIRO, KKDZ, and KIXI. I had KBRC for a little while, but removed them because they don't have a great signal where I'm at.

Yeah, I can totally see my friend not liking that. She pulls out her iPad and pulls up the RD app.
Me, "You listen over the app, seriously? Have this." Now this is a day when 1250 seems to be acting up, so I pull out the G8 and put it in a particularly bad spot. "ah, good ol' am noise!" Insane laughter.

I caught wind of a rumor from a friend of mine that 1250 had live and local air talent. I was going to send over my complete resume until I realized that Radio Disney being local is the same day that 1250 is #1 in the Seattle book. In short, it was just a joke.

I'm glad your friend has a sense of humor! To be fair, some areas have RD outlets that pump out 50kw of audible signal. Notably WQEW in New York, which is a class A 50kw blowtorch all over the east coast. That is one way to get the young audience into dxing....

I love 50kw AM radio.

Actually I think RD is live. Actually 1250 does some local public affairs programming, at least they did about 15 years ago. I'll have to dig out that tape, I was on one of their Sunday morning programs.

They probably have some sort of promotions team for getting free swag out into the community during events. I cant say that i've heard anything about live and local talent, though.

Haha you made a debut on KKDZ?

Yeah actually. The local public affairs program was called Kids Care I think, and it aired Sunday mornings at 8:30. My sister, my dad and I were on the program one week when I was about 7. Actually I'm surprised I'm not surrounded by strangers wanting an autograph at this point, I'm sort of locally famous. Remember the blind guy hitting a beeping baseball that's been played at least 3 times on KOMO? That's me. Hard to believe that was 6 years ago already. I've also been in the paper a couple times.

That is actually really cool. I've never been on television, or in the newspaper before.

Your real identity has been revealed!

Bobcavdav,
I re-read this thread and I think the problem with buzzing in your clock radio is probably RFI from somewhere in your house.

Your clock radio is probably picking it up through the power cord.

Running an AM radio on AC power can bring in household RFI because the RFI will travel along the wiring of the house and enter the radio that way. It may be minimized by turning the radio -- but having an AM radio on AC power is asking for household RFI to leak into the radio.

Your G8 isn't picking it up probably because you are running it on batteries only. So it is not picking up the RFI through the power cord.

FM wouldn't have much (if any) buzzing because Frequency Modulation is noise free by nature. You may be having problems hearing Kiss FM because of the location of the radio. When you moved the radio it may have moved into an FM dead spot. Sometimes moving an FM radio or antenna a foot or two will bring the radio out of a dead spot.

RE: KOMO: their night pattern seems to have two minor null points (according to RadioLocator, anyway). One is aimed at Renton, Issaquah, and Wenatchee. The other minor null is aimed at parts of Covington, Maple Valley and Black Diamond. This may explain why you don't pick KOMO up as well at your friend's house in Black Diamond.

KIRO also has a minor null in the direction of Maple Valley, according to Radio Locator. Whether this affects Black Diamond or not, I don't know.

RE: 1250 KKDZ: They used to be called Kidstar, and had local talent.

KKDZ flipped to Radio Disney in 1997 after Kidstar fell apart. I hear them very weakly in the day and weak on KDZR 1640 as well from Portland/Lake Oswego. KMKY 1310 is very common at night it seems as well.
