KOMO/KIRO - Numbers : Morning News

Okay - lots of prognostication on this board about the death of KIRO.

What I want to know is - how is KIRO's remaining NEWS product doing?

How is the morning news with Gregg and Jane doing (I actually really liked Friday morning's version with Jane and Tony Minor, but I digress)?

How is it doing in comparison with the morning news with Manda and Bill on KOMO?

I think that both news products have their pluses and minuses - I've been listening to KIRO a lot lately, though I think overall I like KOMO's whole morning team better...

Let me friggin check for ya: Oh yeah: NO ONE CARES, THEY ALL
ARE AT THE BOTTOM.

Want the real friggin answer to your question. Mornings rank as
follows dude: KVI, KIRO, KOMO, KTTH, KIXI. None in the top ten
last trend, except KVI.

Time to ask about FM and Satellite radio, where the real friggin
action is. Savage beat every AM morning show except one on a regular
basis, and he lost his job. Get a friggin clue.

Time to quit wastin your time on this site...

SAVAGE RULES.

Wish I had access to the info (other than second hand) so I could help you out. I have been sampling both AS A LISTENER, though ... and while I am TRYING to filter my biases (I tend to prefer the people who've been in the biz a long time) ... I'm still coming down on a better NEWS product on KOMO because it's pretty consistent hour-to-hour. While M's are great for KOMO's numbers (and awareness); I wish it didn't get in the way of having one, reliable, ongoing news and information station that you punch in when something's up, want the traffic, etc. at any point of any day. I would have preferred KVI adopt Mariners (except for weaker signal) as displacing talk shows is not as big of a deal when there's a b-ball game.

KIRO still has a good news team (including the street reporters); but even though I lean "left" I'm not a fan of most of their talk hosts. Dave Ross is VERY good -- knows his stuff, sounds professional, and not really hung up on making HIMSELF the center of the universe. Don't get that same vibe from Dori or Prell -- seems to be a lot of focus on themselves as a personality over and above the issues and any depth. It's the same reason I can't listen to Rush or Stern very much -- so much personal promotion and not much listening to what the incoming points of view are all about -- (where Ross DOES listen and probe and takes unfounded points of view to task on their weak arguments). I recognize that the "push listeners' buttons" thing is inherent to talk radio ... so I'm not criticizing the approach; just saying it causes me to tune out when it's so mono-focused on "look at ME ME ME ME". Reminds me of someone who hooks up to ask your advice, then constantly drowns out the advice you have to give cuz they are being so defensive!!

Why accept phone calls if you're not going to LISTEN and make the caller center stage?? That approach is what made J. Carson so great -- he always let the guest own the stage and the direction of conversation; while Carson simply owned the pace and the show direction. Oprah, Leno, Letterman, and especially Conan are all tough to watch when they get into the "it's all about ME" mindset....! Still can't figure out how Conan has been on THIS long??!!

As a completely separate aside...has anyone seen the NBC anchor on "Early Today" (4:30am) - repeated on KONG, I think, at 6:30am? Nice looking...but I tend to listen and not watch and she and the weather partner remind me of something I'd see and hear on a community college!!!?? This is the number ONE national network and it's the best they can attract??!!

Re: KOMO/KIRO The Real Story

Seems I end up correcting posts every trend. These
are trends folks and mean NOTHING! KVI had a very
strong trend, but is not the leader on the AM dial
in the morning on the rolling average, two book or four
book. KIRO is number one, KOMO and KVI are tied for second.
KTTH a distant fourth. All are no longer in the top ten in
mornings. KIRO is off about 50% from a year ago, KOMO is flat,
KVI is up and KTTH is flat in the latest trending. Pretty
much applies to all important demos. Hope that helps.

So who is in the top ten in mornings in sales demos?
KMPS, KZOK, KRWM, KPLZ, KUBE, KMTT, KCMS, KBSG, KJR-FM,
and KISW.

Kristine Johnson was hired by MSNBC for MSNBC Live (day time news program) and was so horrifying that the not very good Contessa Brewer (who had done Early Today and MSNBC's First Look) was sent to the daytime MSNBC Live and they put Johnson on the early morning stuff - where all the anchor has to do is read the teleprompter.

And yes, Kristine and weather girl Rosey Edeh (was at CNN for a short time) are pretty awful.

Have you ever considered a career in law enforcement as a hostage negotiator? I think your calm, cool, level-headed rational thinking and low-key demeanor is exactly what they are looking for.

I notice, KQBZ with their morning powerhouse of Robin and Maynard seem to be missing.

How did they do in the ranking of mornings in sales demos?
