KOMO Mornings

Tuned into KOMO without Bill this morning. Tom Hutler was filling in and sounded very good. I wonder if he will be the in-house replacement or if KOMO will look for other talent. Mike West, Marty Riemer and others come to mind as solid local hosts that might bring a new sound and audience. Hutler sounds very good as well and has a solid delivery. I wonder if there are other local air talent who would make a good co-host or will KOMO look for established news voices both inside and outside the market? Bill Yeend will be hard to replace. I liked his laid back, casual style.

What is that to the local listener?
They want someone they know, is from here, sounds like one of their friends who is capable of shaeing the feeling of the day, on a consistent basis! Tom H. is certainly capable of that. There are only a couple of others that come to mind that could fill that role, one name comes to mind that is a former member of the staff but it's not my place to name names...
Is the Fisher Mgmt. capable of finding that person, that Manda will work with.... not that she is difficult but... hopefully it is not a long drawn out process.
 
Gosh it shoudn't REally take too long to find a smart eGG to HirE Regional talent that SHOuLd fiT.
 
The new morning host on KOMO sounds like a top 40 disk jockey to me. His voice is unnaturally deep (especially on the highly processed the FM feed), as if he's concentrating on how low he can go, rather than using a natural, relaxed voice to describe what he's discovered in his reporting, or to read news items others have written.

Whereas the frequent male KOMO evening newscaster, whose name escapes me, has a very pleasant radio voice, but doesn't exaggerate a "ballsy" tone. Performance can indeed get in the way of the content, if the makes the announcer sounds like he's out of his league.

Sounding like a credible journalist is a lot different than selling cheap furniture or plugging casinos and car races.

You are hearing Tom's natural voice, and I think he sounds great. Agree with Gary, Greg H would be great, Brian Calvert too. I think
Tom may already be the guy! If so, he's more than capable. There's also Rhett Walker aka Gary Burleigh aka Gary Shannon in the house!
 
Isn't Tom busy enough already? Mariners announcing, sports and news fill-ins, now news being permanent, and doesn't he do some commercials? I've heard what sounds like his voice on a number of commercials for various things, West Coast Vinyl being one of them. Also I could swear he is the station voice for some stations, KEHK, KKOB-FM, WNNK, WQSM, WJBQ, and I feel like I'm forgetting a few. Am I correct here?
 
I've said Gregg Hersholt all along. My friend and I were discussing it just last night and that's the first name I brought up when he asked me...
 
Gregg is an obvious choice but I wonder what happened to Brian Gregory. He too could fit and in my opinion is missed doing business news.
 
Where is Gregg Hersholdt? I though I heard him in Portland not too long ago. He would be a great choice. Hutler sounds very good and that is his natural voice, same voice you hear at Mariners games. I don't think it is affected, just deep. One of the afternoon guys on KIRO sounds very affected in his delivery (ron or don) but the show rates well. Hutler was on KJR and KPLZ for years as I recall. Stealing Radke would hurt KIRO-FM and help KOMO, but I would bet he is under contract. I hope they choose an in market talent, maybe someone from television could make the jump.
 
I too was thinking of Brian Gregory since I hadn't heard him for a while. Guess it won't be him since his personal website states that he was with KOMO through February 2012.

The uneducated might think so, but it's not the case. I've seen the research on what types of voices men and women target audiences like best. Have you?

What men consider a masculine "ballsy" voice like Hutyler is actually perceived as threatening by women. Radke, in a test, would do much better.

That is why Bill Yeend did such a great job. My friend had a great voice that men and women would find entertaining and relaxing to listen to.
