Numbers...the next to last refuge for scoundrels....
All KEXP needs are it's flesh and blood listeners, not numbers on paper. For a non-com in the Seattle area and for it's signal strength, KEXP does surprisingly well. You can interpret numbers any way you want. You can't do that with actual people.....

They're not ignoring it..didn't KOMO-TV just do a story on them...oh, wait, you said you don't LIVE in this market? So how can you make a presumption of KEXP's success (or alleged lack thereof) if you're not here to meet some real live KEXP listeners. They're everywhere in Seattle you know.....
Wouldn't we as "major media" have found a
> way to capitalize on it by now..thus marginalizing KEXP
> anyway?
Conglomerate radio has desperately tried that in the '90s with various attempts at Alternative/AAA formats that try to sound like KEXP, but in the end just sound like crappy stations.
They just don't get it. You cannot MARKET what KEXP does. Because KEXP's success isn't measured in dollars. To it's listeners, KEXP is more than just another radio station. KEXP listeners are far savvier than your average marketing gimmicks can fool. You just don't understand how BIG Traditional Burmese music and The New Pornographers really are these days.
How DO they do that? Their formula is a lot simpler than you think, but why is it so hard for the conglomerates to understand? They CAN make a potentially profitable similar sounding format. HOW??!!
That's for us hippie stoners to know and you to find out.....
Isn't it better to assume that it really isn't that
> big..and that KEXP with its little 1.xx ratings, poor tsl,
> poor AQH numbers, etc...just really isn't on to something
> that MOST people in America are into? Seems that way to me

Maybe it's not what YOU'RE into. You see, you have to KNOW the music you're playing-not just bits from MTV, Entertainment Weakly or some gossip show. KEXP ushered in the grunge revolution in the '90s. It was also the first to bring Death Cab For Cutie and Modest Mouse to radio ears and now international superstardom......

But how many LOYAL listeners do you have for your station, who have written personal handwritten letters of praise to your station? How many dedicated listeners around the world do you have tuning in your station? How many cutbacks did you make to get the revenue books looking good? Who is your competition?.....
In the end, numbers don't mean s--t. It's the actual listeners....
P.S. Thanx for the Leisure Suit Larry comment, in fact I even bought a '70s vintage leisure suit at Goodwill today for Halloween (looking for some gold disco bling and a Saturday Night Fever 8-Track now.......)
