KOOL 101 - Flirting With The 80's?

I don't know if it's just because it's a Friday, but this morning on KOOL 101, Jim Reed has been playing several 80's tracks, some for the first time, at least to my ears. In fact, this hour alone, I heard "Night Shift" from The Commodores and Dexy's Midnight Runners' "Come On Eileen." The titles didn't appear on the player so I don't think they're expected to be added to the rotation (though IMHO they would fit with the rest of the regular playlist), but it makes me wonder.

WDRC-FM already plays a few 80s tracks. In fact, the latest song they play is actually from 1993. That would be "River Of Dreams" by Billy Joel.

@KMS: I suppose when you're a small market, you can get away with it...

If the songs fit in with the playlist, I'm sure the audience won't have a problem with it. A shoo-in for an 80's add would be Dire Straits' "Walk Of Life" - which actually refers to classic oldies songs in the lyrics... that's a bonus.

Some early 80s are okay. When you consider the list posted by kms575, guess as the song goes, it's time for a KOOL change. :-*

A bump of this thread to send a "batsignal" (cue the Marketts track from 1966) to freightliner: Are you aware that many of the new titles that have been added to the rotation are not showing up on the Kool player (and likewise on TuneIn Radio's website/app when streaming the station through that outlet)? I thought I should point this out in the event that you may not be aware.

Of course, songs like "Come On Eileen" and "Night Shift," as mentioned in the original post in this thread, are now being heard regularly on Kool's playlist as of June 1.

Good for Jim! THAT' S what ALL oldies stations need to do. Successful oldies stations are NOW playing LATE 60s, 70,s and not just a few but ALL 80s. Oldies stations that don't roll with these changes are going under. The ratings and revenue aren't there anymore.

Stations that play 50s, 60s 70s and some early 80s are certainly not going under. Those that throw in the occasional 60s tune when it doesn't fit their format (because they don't know how to place it, which merely draws attention to their ne'er do wells) will be gone long before the 50s through early 80s stations.

And I know that every once in awhile, Jim likes to throw in an "oh wow" 60's song during his morning show... though obviously, he hasn't done that as much since the format modification earlier this month. I also notice that 60's staples on the Kool playlist such as The Turtles' "You Baby" aren't being played as much as they used to.

Not to stray too far off topic here, but can you imagine what it will be like when we're all "flirting with the 80's" (God willing...)

@Necrat: And chances are, we might be having this same discussion in about five years when we discuss if someone (specifically, some station) is "flirting with the 90's". :D

The '90s are going to be a tough, if not impossible, fit for the classic hits format because CHR lost so many of its over-30 listeners when hip-hop and grunge invaded the charts at the end of the '80s. '70s/'80s/'90s isn't going to work at all, and even an '80s/'90s station is going to cherry-pick the '90s very carefully for songs that aren't going to drive away the Huey Lewis/Cyndi Lauper crowd. Note that today CBS is switching WODS Boston to CHR. Maybe classic hits' days as a viable, sellable format are more numbered than we think.

Oh god what a horrible song. I cringe every time I hear it...!!!
