Kool 101 New London Changes

If you're into airchecks and format changes, I'd be listening to WKNL, Kool 101 in New London tonight, and I'd be rolling tape at midnight.

Just sayin'.

Obviously, I'm stunned. But this "Roxy" business sounds like a stunt. Rare for a station to flip in December without playing wall-to-wall Christmas music first.

I expect to hear from "freightliner" about this.

You would think that in this day and age Hall Communications would have a website ready for the new format. So, maybe it is a stunt.

Trust me, this isn't a stunt. Nobody buys jingles for a stunt. This is real, and it makes a lot of sense for the cluster. If the station can knock BMW down a share or two, it'll boost the ranking for WCTY, which will benefit when the agencies come knocking. Hall Norwich has skewed old and male for years, this brings balance into the cluster.

As for execution? I'm pretty disappointed in Jim and Andy on this one. The female voice talent is great, but the imaging is lame and the jingles are AWFUL. As is that name... Roxy? You've gotta be kidding me. It sounds like a 60-something radio dude is trying to appeal to women and is failing... Which is the exact situation.

It's a great idea, but it's being executed very poorly so far.

Agreed, just heard a sweep that said something like "With 100 minutes of Commercial Free Roxy music, you have plenty of time to let your nails dry." LOL.

Funny you mention that - Kool 101 had just recently gotten new jingles for the first time in ages, while also changing their positioners and tweaking their music away from traditional Oldies and towards your standard modern Classic Hits format. So I'm a little surprised to see them do a full-fledged flip now. But then again, it's not exactly unheard of for a station to tweak shortly before changing gears completely.

Oh boy... Where do I begin? First they took away my WTYD in 1996 and replaced it with Oldies.... and now THIS?!?!? Do us all a favor and go back to the WTYD format.... I know those old logs have to be around somewhere- bring back the format as it was in 1996..... Play Lite Rock from 1970-1995 and be done with it--- I'd listen all day long.....!

Pretty soon there will be nothing but top 40 craptastic trash across the whole band. As if ClearChannel didn't kill radio enough....??

Also- I listened on tunein on my way home today, and the audio quality is TERRIBLE--- it streams at 32k.... Sounds far worse than AM radio. Nobody I know would listen to that for very long....... The stream also skipped several times, but that could be due to a poor VZW 3g signal while mobile.

my two cents..... Not that anybody cares.... And not that Jim will change the Format back to WTYD, as he despises that format....! lol.....

Jingles are often bought on barter. So, it's not a big deal either way. However, when in doubt, it's never a stunt. Stunts that sound like a real format are very rare, especially if you don't notice heavy repetition after the first couple days.

You're off by 4 years, there. The Tide was around until February 2000, filling the hole left from when The Wave was killed off the last week of December 1999.

[Note-content removed per TOS.]

I see they've got a new studio line - which means they're finally going to part ways with the station's last known link to its old "Tide" format (the old number ended with 8433, which spells out "TIDE" on the telephone keypad)...

noo.... Say it isn't so.... I miss the seagulls on the Tide logo...............! I believe I have some recordings of tide liners on tape somewhere. I'll have to dig those out..... How sad. :(

America dies a little more each day......!
