KOOL 94.5 Format 1968 TO 1972

Hey Guys:

Was KOOL 94.5 between 1968 and 1972 a MOR station or a Top 40? I saw a survey from 1972 describing KOOL 94.5 as a Top 40.

Thanks

T.J.

I made several trips from Tucson to Phoenix in '68 and '69 and seem to remember it as Top-40. I don't ever remember it as MOR but then I was a visitor to Phoenix and didn't live here in those days.

Maybe a shoutout to KOOL Listener Lauren could answer your question. I looked on Phoenix Airchecks web site but KOOL-FM isn't there (or I didn't see it). You can email her at [email protected].

When I lived in one of the hick suburbs of Phoenix from 72 to 75, KOOL-FM was oldies... I even applied for a part time job there!

Old Gringo,

Maybe they didn't hire you because they knew you'd tell them
'50s music would kill the demos. ;) (David, I kid.)

Seriously, how far back did they go? 1955 or so, with some
earlier '50s R&B? I assume "oldies" meant oldies as we've
known it for some time now--no big band or other '40s stuff.

No standards. In fact, from what I recall, they steered away from the obviously more MOR songs. What I can not remember is whether they played some "future gold" as many oldies stations in that era played.

It was Buddy Holly, Danny and the Juniors and not that much Little Richard and Fats Domino. Even the Motown was less emphasized than the Hermans Hermits kind of thing... at least as I recall. I'd just come from two markets with a lot of rhythmic influence, so I felt KOOL was quite a different flavor.

Thanks, landtuna!

I'm still working on the KOOL-AM page and have not yet started with KOOL-FM. To be honest, I could really use some scanned items/memorabilia of KOOL-FM stuff from long ago.

I could have answered the question if he were asking about KOOL-AM during those years.

Wikipedia says KOOL-FM started playing Oldies in '71 but there is nothing on their history prior to that. I could not find other sources on the web either.

In the early 80's they would also include a few currents like Phil Collins "Sussudio" or Wham "Everything She Wants.

Considering KKFR's format at the time was a hybrid of oldies and currents like Sussudio or Everything She Wants, I suppose that was in response to 92 You're Fired FM.

The Fire Station? I don't discover them until KOPA and KUKQ (Urban) left the airwaves (those was all I knew as a youngster....OH and KZZP too!)

Back when KOPA and KUKQ were around, 92.3 was KJJJ - KJ Country.

Unless you want to really go back in the day to KXTC - Disco 92.

Did 92.3 dupe the KJJJ 910 calls at one time? Circa September 1984 they
were KEZC "Easy Country," while 910 was KJJJ "Country Gold"--both owned
by the Beer Baron. By late summer '85, the AM was N/T KFYI.

Before polyester suits (think Herb Tarlek) and the disco demolition derby,
what was KXTC's primary format? The '73 yearbook lists "Full community
serv. Spec progs: Jazz 35 hrs wkly."

And lets not forget KBBC, "The Better Boogie Company" and PD Tony Booth.

I believe 92.3FM and 910AM were once affliated

Yes, the Beer Baron.

But as to the Q "did 92.3 ever use the calls KJJJ-FM?" First, I'll call in
Special Agent Gibbs to slap me on the back of the head as I say "d'oh"
since I could have looked in the FCC database:

KJJJ-FM (begin date 09/11/84)

Preceded by KEZC (12/09/82) and followed by KKFR (09/06/85).

I remember KJJJ prior to KEZC (Easy Country). I remember KJ coming back after they gave up on KEZC.

When KJ went EZ, I recall KDKB flipping its AM (1510) to KJAA as "KJ Country." Then it returned to KDJQ with a simulcast of Bill & John in the morning and automated rock the rest of the day.

Sometime around then I also recall KOPA flipping its AM 1440 to rock as "X-Rock" KXAM. We didn't own a car with an FM radio until the mid '80's, so I heard a lot of AM growing up.

Wasn't there also a period when KXAM 1440 had an R&B format?

They probably switched the Lumberyard back to KOPA during the period when
the AM aired the same songs/spots as the FM, but did it ten minutes later,
and jockless--AKA getting around the simulcast rules then in effect.

Wow really? What year did that happen? And what kind of rock did they play? I'm sure I was too young to remember because my recollection of KOPA AM was a repeat of the FM. However, I also recall times where they were not exact and sometimes even the song version on the FM was different then the AM
