KOOL and good food Birch Beer

Hi, wow I was in Phoenix last weekend to take my uncle to the hospital. I always like to go there to get out of Yuma for a few days and to listen to radio there. I have been working a little bit as the Hoagland Bros trucking folks are giving me short hauls that don't make me take a physical, and some that are days only so I don't get to drive at night. I take a few runs with ice that I deliver to service stations, and sometimes I get to take vegitables up to Nevada if the weather is okay. The other drivers for Hoagland don't like that because of the waiting around the border stop to check the vegitables for bugs, but I don't mind much unless it's hot, and it has been so I don't like that. But anyway when I took my uncle Vernon to St. Joe's, I had some time and went to a little joint on Thomas road. I don't remember the name but they had a real good hambuger and they has Birch Beer? Have you ever had Birch Beer? It is like root beer, but made with Birches, and I don't think it has liquor in it, but the hamburger was very tasty and so were the french fries, and they had KOOL radio station playing oldies so I was in hog heaven. You should try that place sometime man it was good, and nurses eat there too.

thank you

Howard

Howard,

You've simply GOT to remember the places you eat! Phoenix is a big place.....not like Yuma. It'll cause us to eat continuously to try to find your favorite watering hole. ;D ;D ;D

hmmmm...whenever Nurse Jeff drinks suds, it's called Bitch Beer! Great to know you're still 18 wheelin' it, Howard... but how come you didn't tell that burger bar on Thomas about Lumberyard 14~Forty? I guess all those talk shows from the late KXAM are forcing hgoldminers to FM. Somehow we thought the answer to AM's problems was to play music ::)

do you remember when we used to sing....sha la la la (etc)

I think this restaurant is called Fifth Street Restaurant. like the candy bar or something. Man I like that candy bar, and I remembered that it sounded like that..maybe 5th street or 5th Avenue I am srory I don't know. And since I don't have a credit card I didn't pay with anything but money so I don't have it written down. It was near the big hospital. Today I have to go to the dentist. The only dentist that I go to is a children's dentist in Yuma. He is not as mean as some of the adult ones, and he doesn't talk so much when your mouth is full of pipes and cotton. Yah, I am not looking forward to this, but a few of my teeth are starting to hurt a little and one is coming apart.

I also listened to the Lamptime radio station on 1440 on AM. It played more better music like Lesly Gore. Man I like her a lot.

Things go better with Leslie Gore! Just follow the link, Howard, and you'll be tappin' your toe against the Peterbuilt firewall with this snappy commercial never heard on Lumberyard 14~Forty: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOPnS8_AHiA

Howard,

Most likely you are very wrong. Birch beer has a great deal of alcohol in it. It just tastes like root beer. I'll feel so much safer now every time we pass a big rig on I-8 next time we're headed over to SD for some fresh air.
('hic')
Sincerely,

Gale

Gale: Wikipedia states that "Birch Beer" is a carbonated soft drink. Why do you think it is highly alcoholic?

I was trying to imply that there may have been a couple of healthy shots of peppermint schnaps in Howards root beer. Sorry for any confusion.

According to Nurse Jeff's global brain positioning system, that burger barn could be in the vicinity of St Joseph Hospital at 5th Av & Thomas. And because Howard was also thinking of the infamous 5th Avenue candy bar, we're almost certain of the location. Guess someone will have to do a drive-by to identify this epicurean eatery. We'll get ahold of the Old Gringo for an emergency consult.

You call it Lamtime, we call it Lumberyard. Don't matter 'cause it's 100% pure Gumpdusky all of the day and none of the night!

Ah, but All Day And All Of The Night (Kinks, 1965) should be a staple of the
Lumberyard's playlist. Maybe not as much as My Way, but... ;D

Howard probably ate at the 5th Ave Cafe....501 W. Thomas. Sort of a diner style inside. Some call it a greasy spoon type small town cafe. Formerly Dee's. I think, way back, it was an Upton's for you old timers. Very reasonable prices.....check their reviews on www.yelp.com/phoenix

I'm of no use here... the closest I come to St. Joseph is Good Samaritan, a short distance to the southeast on McDowell... where my second daughter was born (in an era where there were not many Arizona natives!)

I "Don Ameche-d" the 5th Ave. Cafe today (now there's a reference
which may be vague even to some of us older posters ;D) and was
told the establishment does not serve Birch Beer.

Back to the St. Joe's area restaurant guide, I guess.

The Fifth Ave Cafe is kind of artsy, they play jazz and it isn't a birch beer kind of place. You had me goin' on the reference, o.f., I was thinking Cocoon and Harry and the Hendersons!

I should have read your post before I made mine, pberger. I may have it confused with another restaurant. , though the place I'm thinking of was diner -like. It just seemed to have a lot of artsy type patrons.
