KOOL Challenge?

Do you think if another station switched to what I would call a classic oldies station focusing on 60s and 70s mostly do you think it would be a good challenge to KOOL? I am not a regular listener of KOOL but noticed iscussion around of them giving alot of 80s airtime as of light. Just tossing it out there....

I think if another station with a good signal could replicate what KOOL-FM was 10-15 years ago, complete with the expanded playlist, great DJ's and special programs, it would do really well.

IMHO, KOOL-FM was at one time the best Oldies station in the country. It is very sad to see what it has turned into.

Hmmmm interesting. One of these Hot ac stations should try oldies and follow that plan. It sure wouldn't hurt.

Yes, I know many (former) listeners that believe a good oldies station is needed here in phoenix (50s-70s rock & roll)

Too many of the stations here all sound alike here.
It would be a nice change. I'm from the midwest, where this still works.
It's a shame that Phoenix radio is so bad.
Thank God for the internet!

Oldies today are '80s+...pre 1980, it's your grandparents' music. And then there's the issue of 55+ demos. As we say at the Buckeye Media Hut, ''...there's no future in the past"

And we keep disagreeing Kemo Sabe.

I don't know what KOOL bills but have been told it does very well. If so then there is no need for them to change anything. If, however, another good signal wants to test the theory I think there is room for them. A station playing solid core Oldies/Classic Hits (mid-50's through mid-80's) and carrying local ads (no agencies except those who do buy the older demo) AND having jocks either live or VT (appearing live) might do very well.

It would be very interesting to know what age groups make up KOOL's current listeners. Every time I hear a caller on-air their voice seems to be that of a younger adult.

I don't see this happening, but pretending is free:

Who would do this?

Clear Channel: They have no more signals to buy, and all their FMs are in good shape financially. I would see 95.5 flip to KFYI FM before any other change was made. 95.5 may be a weaker sister in the CC cluster, but it's hardly weak. But... if they did go oldies, CC would probably put in an over-researched, generic and voice-tracked package that would pale in comparison to KOOL, even if the music was "better".

Sandusky: KSLX bills well and PPM has been kind. They do a nice job, so... no. KUPD fills the modern rock niche, which has its issues, but I suspect it bills pretty well. KDKB, perhaps, but this is the station that just will not die... nor should it. We make fun of Gumpdusky, but these stations have little or no debt to service, have mostly live and local talent, and must pay the bills just fine. So what's so bad about that? They aint changin' anytime soon.

Bonneville: 98.7? Hmmmm.... This one might make sense. But would it bill higher than what the Peak does now? Doubtful. 92.3 is staying news/talk.

The Rim-shots: We've exhausted the So. Mountain Class C sticks, but there are a few frequencies that do well in the metro Phoenix DBA.

1. 103.5 - I bet they're very happy with what they are doing.

2. 105.9 - Same as 103.5

3. 103.9 - Why not? This may actually make some sense.

Are you telling me there's no hope for Perry Como making a comeback?!

???

Anyway, I'd like to point out an example of why the Buckeye Media Hut is correct in the above saying.

Classic Country.

Anyone know of a market where Waylon and Willie is standing toe to toe with Jason Aldean and Taylor Swift in the ratings and revenue department?

And now I'd like to ask an honest question about the opposite situation:

Is K-Slacks beating KUPD in the ratings or revenue department? Because it seems to my untrained observation that in the rock radio world, there is more of a future in the past than there is a future in the present.

I know this would never happen but ditch Eva and turn it in to "Classic" Y 95 The valleys "true" oldies channel ;-)

Don't forget CC has the "Real Oldies" format, heavy 60s, some 50s and 70s

I wish there could be a classic oldies station focusing on non-mainstream 60's/70's, stuff like The MC5, The Troggs, The Monks, Montrose, Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart, Alice Cooper [the band]....that would be a worthy competitor to both KOOL and KSLX, who (I could be mistaken) I don't recall has ever played Black Sabbath. I think KUPD did, at one time. Do any stations play Black Sabbath these days?
