KOOL-FM is still playing Christmas music after December 25th

I wonder how their ratings were in Nov & Dec?

Most everyone I know (that were loyal KOOL listeners) tuned them out when the Christmas music started after halloween. All this did was introduce listeners that like KOOL to KSLX & other stations (and HD radio)
The genius that came up with this should be fired.

I have no idea who is running that station, but it has really gone into the toilet in 2008.
They laid off Camelback Jack? Man, he's been there a long time. This must be a sign the end is near for KOOL.

I think that it's funny that the other "KOOL" stations in the country seem to be sticking to the oldies format more than the original KOOL-FM. They also are starting to sound better than KOOL-FM here in Phoenix. KOOL 105 in Denver is playing oldies right now. So is KOOL 101 in New London, Connecticut. KOOL-FM in Phoenix was the inspiration for all the other KOOL stations across the country and needs to get back to their glory days before CBS screwed the station up. I miss Chancellor Media Corporation and Colfaz Broadcasting! :'(

KOOL Nightmare Ends!

Our long local radio nightmare is finally over!

Classic hits returned to KOOL-FM at midnight.

(Where's the icon for "whew"? :D)

I find out on the radio early in the morning at 3:33 AM that KOOL-FM has return to the oldies after Midnight on Monday. No more Christmas songs.

I did not hear this myself, but a reliable source tells me that the first spin
of Brown Eyed Girl did not occur until about 1:30am.

Hey PD Kris--what took you so long? ;D

To Legend City: Off board subject with light rail isn't it? The trolleys make point-to-point in less time than buses for the same route. You might want to visit the rail line. There are two tracks. Keeps them upright better than one. :D LOL

Nurse Jeff and I rode Skip's Folley...er, Trolley late Sunday afternoon from Park Central to 24th St & Washington. Yuck...more crowded than a dollar store on Saturday afternoon; more street people with multiple piercings than you'd find at the downtown Y; the predominant use of non-english as the official mass transit language; overpriced lofts for sale with views of Starbucks everywhere, and stops at every red light and trolley stop. It took 45 minutes to go approximately four miles. A rickshaw could have made the trip faster! Fortunately there were free CNG shuttle buses to use for the return trip, otherwise we'd be out well past our curfew!

But hey, it did beat hearing Brown Eyed Girl for the 24,857th time!

I saw the photos of Light Rail Day on azcentral.com. It reminded me of Barry Young's line from a few years back about
Valley Metro's riders looking like Apocalypse survivors (or something like that). And while we're on the (off topic) subject, we have "neighborhood circulator" buses here in Ahwatukee that haven't collected a dime of fare in all of the years that they've been in operation. Hasn't the city ever stopped to wonder if paying the drivers, buying the gas, doing the maintenance, etc. and getting nothing in return is contributing to the budget shortfall?

oldiesfan and Doc, "Brown Eyed Girl" would beat the heck out of some of the stuff I've been hearing on KOOL today (AND the past couple of months for that matter!)..

I have to say, its great to hear oldies again on KOOL. Its hard to figure this board out sometimes. They play oldies and the baord says they play Brown Eyed Girl over and over. They play Christmas songs and for some reason the board believes that only KEZ can ever play a holiday song. KOOL sounds great right now. Just heard 70's Billy Joel followed up by a solid Motown tune. That works for me and I am an old guy. Goddard and Tom Peak have been doing it for as long as anybody. I can't think of another station that has that has pros with 25+ years in the market in both mornings and afternoons. You could give me a hundred bucks for every KSLX jock I could name and it wouldnt cost you a dime. And, sad thing is I listen to the station almost every day.

How is this for an odd thread. What do you like about KOOL? Come on, we all would cry 'what have they done to our station' if all the sudden it was gone tomorrow.

Might we suggest you tune to Lumberyard 14~Forty between the hours of 7:30-ish AM and 5:15-ish PM (LST*) for a daytime trip to the Goldmine? Of course if you need some blasts from the past after local sunset, you are S.O.L. as Gumpdusky hasn't figured out how to run that thing at night or stream audio!

*LST - lamptimer standard time-ish

Staying off-board subject: Rode Metro on 29 December from end to end. Overall good experience. Trains were packed. More riders going East to West but probably due to it being free and time of day (Eastbound 10:00 AM, Westbound 3:00 PM).

I took the light rail to and from the airport on Sunday. It was very crowded, and it took a bit longer than I thought it should have, but overall, I was impressed. I have a friend who took a short trip today (from Central & Indian School down to near Central & McDowell), and he also had a pleasant experience.

I have caught 1440 a few times Dr., and it's the closest thing to the old Kool Gold 960 I've found. And no worries about night, I can take turns listening to Miller, Crummey, Luvable One and Savage.

You're probably right MondayMorningQB and to be honest, I haven't really listened since they quit playing Christmas music, Kool may be back to its old self for all I know. Before the holiday music, they were playing a lot of 80s, which I don't mind, just not on Kool. And when I say 80s, I don't mean mainstream like Smokey Robinson or Fleetwood Mac. It was like KSLX stuff-which I don't mind when I'm listening to KSLX.

Grapevine. Marvin. 68 gold. Right now, on 94.5 KOOL-FM.
(Think NFVG's liner delivery.)

And I can name that tune in one note. ;)

Since the Christmas music ended, I've heard "Forever Young" by Rod Stewart (90's?) and "Into the Night" by Benny Mardones (80's?). Plus lots of KSLX-type classic rock tunes mixed in too. The Benny Mardones song was especially jarring to hear on KOOL.

NFVG did a bit that was something like "This is Bob, the guy who plays the commercials, and we've cut his position so we can play more music". IMHO, that's kind of a slap in the face to all of the first-class talent that CBS/KOOL really has fired in the last year, not to mention everyone else who is now unemployed in this economy. Not something to joke about right now, CBS.

KOOL hardly plays any eighties. It seems there may be a little bit more post Christmas. I travel a lot and KOOL is more 'true' to the great old songs than most oldies stations.

And, I think its overanalyzing on the downsizing joke as its everywhere in our world. If that were the case, maybe KOOL shouldn't play any of the songs they used to play before they had to downsize.

And, how did Clear Channel downsize and voice track all their PHX stations years ago and it has so become the norm that (almost forgotten) that when CBS is forced into replacing some shifts with voice tracking you would think they violated the Geneva convention.

In all honesty, all radio is less than it used to be. Less than what I would want it to be. But I can appreciate KOOL trying to adapt and keep a great station on top.

What I can't appreciate is a formerly great station sounding awful and clueless, throwing different kinds of songs from different eras at the wall to see what will stick until there's just a big mess left. Sorry.

They seem to range 64-84 (mostly 64-74). 10 to 20 years of 'eras'. In all honesty, that can be said of almost any FM on the dial. A few that jump to mind:
93.3
94.5
95.1
96.9
97.5
98.7
99.9
and 102.5/107.9

Surely I have left some out. And those are just non-Spanish.

Just saying.
